Faster Mustache Consumer Alert

X-topher's picture

I was drinking a sports beverage today when I noticed this label: "Gatorade is a smart choice for athletes becasue it repleneshes and rehydrates in ways water can't. www.smartspot.com"
So im thinking, is this some sort of public/private food watchdog that offers practical advice for eating healthy. So I visit the website and something is fishy: the products are all subsisiaries or affiliates of Pepsico. Im not Shitting you! Their motto is "Smart Choices Made Easy".

I still need to do some research to see if someone is trying to stop this before I go and reinvent the protest-wheel. Im posting here for feedback. Thoughts???

PepsiCo

Yeah that domain name is owned by PepsiCo... I still find Gatorade and Powerade to be a rip off. Water with a salt tablet every hour is way cheaper, and you don't juice yourself up on sugars either... it's better to eat a granola bar or something.

truely rediculous

Diet Pepsi is a healthy drink. And my ballsack sweat will quench your thirst. That website is a complete joke. Fuck Pepsi and their brainwashing bullshit.

you did it chris

excellent work, chris. I'm glad to see from the Washington Post article that professionals in the food industry are concerned.

Im not against food brands advertising the nutritional value of their products. Im against food brands posing as objective authorities while secretly steering consumers toward their products. Sure, you could argue that its obvious that Pepsi owns smartspot. But I think we mustachios are smarter than the average consumer.

For the lazy, I pulled this

For the lazy, I pulled this good quote from the article.

"among the hundreds of products that carry the Smart Spot logo are Captain Crunch Peanut Butter Crunch cereal, Diet Pepsi and Baked Lays Potato Crisps.

"'A diet of Pepsi and Baked Lays is not what nutritionists have in mind when they talk about eating healthier foods,' said Bonnie Liebman, director of nutrition for the Center for Science in the Public Interest, an industry watchdog group."

yes

A "notsosmartspot.com" would

A "notsosmartspot.com" would be pretty easy to set up if there is interest in persuing this.. I envision people on bikes riding through grocery stories placing notsosmartspot.com stickers on less than healthy choices.

kurt's picture

you hit the sweetspot

That would be awesome. Tagging shitty food with unhealthy stickers that link to sites that break down the nutritional troooth. We could put the stickers right over the "smartspot" stickers. Now I'm going to go see if there are any Krispy Kreme donuts left. And coffee.
