Dirty Spokes 6hr of Ft. Yargo (5-1-10)

This past Saturday, May 1st, was the Dirty Spokes 6/12 hour race at Ft. Yargo State Park in Winder, GA. This is part of what I call the Georgia Endurance Series which is run by Chainbuster Racing and Dirty Spokes. Are they they same company? Yes/No/Maybe? I can’t figure it out but it looks like Chainbuster runs 3 of the 4 races while Dirty Spokes runs this one.

Riding for FM today were Alex, Eric N. and Eric B. Alex and Eric N. were in the 6hr singlespeed class and Eric B. was in the 6hr sport class. I’ll let them post up there reports but the results were: Alex (2nd place), Eric N. (4th place), and Eric B. (13th place). Eric N. had a mechanical on his first lap which likely caused him to miss the podium because he was only 1 minute behind 3rd place. My race was pretty uneventful which I guess is a good thing. Weather was perfect and the rain held off all day. Little misting for an hour but that was a good thing. My goal for the day was 5 laps and while I got my 5 laps I had hoped to do it a little faster. I never cramped and my nutrition felt right all day but I had some lower back pains on the last 2 laps and my legs were just beat after about mile 40.

My other goal for the day was to see how 6 hour endurance racing was since I had never done a race like this. I had heard some mixed opinions of this series from last year because I think they had some timing issues but I have to commend them on how smooth things went Saturday. They had everything dialed in and the RFID things worked great. I knew my place the moment I crossed the line which was cool. Would have been very useful had I been on a team or in contention for the podium. My only complaint is that you never know what class everyone on the trail is in, I’d like to see a class written on the calf but maybe that’s just me.
