Fully loaded we got snacks and supplies

Just went out for a test-ride fully loaded. I've got all my clothes, camping gear, and bike tools. It all fits despite very poor packing and that I will likely bring less than I just packed (4 pair bike shorts? nah, that's too many). The only thing left is extra inner tubes and food.

4 pair bike shorts?

I would pack two. With low humidity you should be able to wash and dry in the same day. I love Ibex's wool knickers. Wore a pair all week in New Mexico last summer without a problem. (Really.)

BTW you're not carrying enough stuff on that bike! JK. Looks great. Have a good time.

.

aren't parts of alaska pretty swampy in the summer? what with the constant snowmelt and all...

The mosquitoes

might carry you away.

Take a close look at my friend. We were hiking at the time, and wondered how they found us so quickly every time we stopped.

Could be the garmet color

A friend was swarmed by large, non-stinging insects on a bike trip in Patagonia. (Kind of a cross between a June bug and a bee.) We think his purple jersey attracted them. Our guide caught and ate one...something about the nectar.

Bullfrog's Mosquito Coast sunscreen/repellent is an effective product. I have tigers in the yard that could compete with those Alaska bugs.

i bought one of these

i bought one of these mosquito net / hat type thingies.

I'm going with 2 pair, but

I'm going with 2 pair, but was mildly concerned about it, feeling better about that choice now.

I overpacked stuff on purpose for the test run just to make sure I have enough room. Obviously there's plenty of space left for things that I might have forgotten. It helps that camping gear is divided between two people. (my brother got a bob trailer, so he's carrying the tent). I think that a small handlebar bag or an over-the-front-wheel bag might be in order -- something to hold a map and a couple snacks...

If I were you

I would ride like hell and then quit about 2/3 of the way through, but don't call it quitting. I hear that is what all the cool cats in Alaska do.

Are you going to be in AK

Are you going to be in AK during the Fireweed 400 this coming weekend? There is a new non-competitive ride:
