there's an awesome ken burns documentary
about jack johnson. you can probably get it from the library.
it's really great, cause jack johnson was around in a time when white people thought they were better than black people at everything, so fights against johnson were pitted as a defining battle in some huge race war, and johnson demolished them every time. they finally had to coax some famous white boxer out of retirement to be the ultimate saving grace of white people everywhere, and of course he was destroyed as well.
johnson also totally flaunted himself: talked a lot of shit, drove fast cars, spent lots of money and was romantically and publicly involved with several white women, and just really pissed off whities everywhere. fun to watch.
