I'm wanting to get a long ride in Sat or Sun.
Either a looking at a fast 75-80 by riding to Rockmart and back or a moderate 100-125 and going to the state line.
You can do it.

I would but I got a 100 miler
I would but I got a 100 miler I'm doing out to Athens and back on Thursday instead.
I'm in if you make it Sunday.
I'm in if you make it Sunday. How fast is fast? I'd prefer the moderate 100-125 option.
I might take a weekend off
I might take a weekend off mtb racing and do this as well and am curious on how fast moderate is! And can us tall-bicycle people just hop on while you pull the whole way?
OK, Sunday it is. Moderate
OK, Sunday it is. Moderate 100-125. Moderate will be a rolling low 17ish? Meaning that there will be some sustained 20+ on the flats to compensate for my 7mph climbing. I usually stop for water and mother nature break at the bathroom after Hiram, Rockmart, Cedartown, and at the stateline. Same for the return. We can adjust the pace for heat however we need to. I plan on taking 2 or 3 bottles. On the generally flat stuff then yeah I'm fine with pulling a big chunk of it, on downhill hang on because it will be fast, on the climbs... Wait for me at the top.
I'll be on my touring setup,
I'll be on my touring setup, so I'll have plenty of extra space for water, food, or whatever. Not exactly a fast setup, but I should be able to handle 17mph.
How early do you want to start?
We should try to roll off
We should try to roll off from the Mavell Rd. trailhead by 7AM on the. That would get us back at a reasonable time, even if you add time for the worse case scenario.
LHT?
sorry but i gotta ask
what do you consider the "worst case scenario?"
5 flats. Or Republicans.
5 flats.
Or Republicans.
Well, the last time I did
Well, the last time I did this route with Billy and Melissa we were shot at.. or over... or something but gunshots and bullets over our heads.
Flats, dehydration, bonk, saddle sores, gastrointestinal discomfort.
I would think getting shot at
I would think getting shot at would speed me up, not slow me down...
Mavell rd is the same as
Mavell rd is the same as Nickajack elementary, right? Mile 0?
yup, LHT. I'm trying to get extra time in the saddle before Alaska.

Got your
bear spray?
No shit
That was my number 1 fear when I was touring and camping. They are curious little critters.
.
just leave out a nice little _picinic_ basket and tell the park rangers to stay off of their case and they should leave you alone.
you don't have to go to alaska
to see a bear from your road bike (last photo)
Different bears
Black bears in the southeast usually aren't too much of a problem. Surprising a brown (Grizzly) bear in a remote section of Alaska could be a little tricky. The only reason I brought it up was that bear spray can't be shipped/transported via plane--has to be shipped UPS ground.
I know
I've seen both kinds up close while on foot. (my off-trail solo encounter with a mid-meal grizzly in Wyoming is definitely a highlight of my personal backpacking story catalog)
BTW no need to ship bear spray to Alaska. They have plenty of it for sale when you get there :)

Excellent!
Excellent!
One more
about Wyoming and the gentle breezes there...
good to know -- couple other
good to know -- couple other things are already hitching a ride with my bicycle (like fuel bottle for my stove -- despite being empty, if there's ever been fuel in it the airlines don't like 'em). most likely i'll pick up the bear-spray in Alaska. Already got a bell.
I had a run-in with a (f'ing huge) brown bear in the backcountry of Yosemite. The bear couldn't have cared less, but it scared the piss out of me. So yeah, I take bear precautions pretty seriously.
BRP
Is a thing of beauty. It is among my favorite spots in the world and the climbs make you feel like you actually accomplished something.

Any word from Phil yet?
Good ride guys. It was hot and long.
The ride may have completely
The ride may have completely destroyed me, but not before I destroyed it first. Didn't get sick until halfway home in the car on the grady curve shoulder.
Just talked to Phil. He got
Just talked to Phil. He got to ride some in the rain which helped with the 100F+ heat index apparently. His saddle-time as right at 8 hours and mine was 7:23 so his long haul trucker only slowed him down a tiny bit!
Glad to hear that he got in
Glad to hear that he got in OK. By far he did more work today than any of us. Phil, if you can haul that bike 125 miles with racks and bags, fat tires and todays heat Alaska will be a sweet tour!
Chris.. all kidding aside you looked like hell towards the end.
Yeah, that ride on that bike
Yeah, that ride on that bike was more than I bargained for. But i had no major pains or discomfort during the ride, and my longest day on tour will be 1/2 of yesterday's distance, so I should be pretty comfy in Alaska.
In retrospect, I was suffering a lot more from the heat than I realized. I stayed hydrated (drank ~250 oz water + 1 gatorade), but my body temp was too high during the return trip. Pretty sure that's why I had to slow down. The rain felt awesome, and I picked up my speed considerably once the rain started and things cooled off.
good ride, next time lets go on a day that's less than 100F....
.
i had to wear armers into work today. alaska should be even better.
86 Fair 35%
A beautiful day in the Hotlanta!
.
i thought i was being a wuss at the time, but i only saw 1 (out of 30) cyclist not wearing sleeves of some sort.
so 29/30 bicyclist in
so 29/30 bicyclist in portland are wusses then?
.
it was ~49 degrees this morning and my commute includes a descent that takes me up to about 30 mph
[edit: fixed the speed]
Wuss

.
lol that's rich considering the source ;)
I know...
it goes without saying, given the source of the wussness, but a lot of people came to FM after you left for pinkoliberalalaland, so...

it's a moist cold when it's cold, so it doesn't make your lungs shrivel and throat burn.
some people find it worse than a dry cold; i just think that they have the wrong clothes.
