Well, I said I wasn't going to race in June, but this was too good to pass up. The Pisgah Brew Crew was putting on a test of speed, skills and endurance, and I wasn't going to miss it. I convinced a friend of my wife's to chaperone the fam while up in Asheville, called Bruce to secure some lodging, and changed out just about every part on my bike, then we headed up to NC to win the title of Most Bad Ass Mountain Biker in the World (MBAMBW)
Saturday morning started out with some BA singletract at Kitsuma. I had a nice map all draw out by Beth and I had a pretty good idea of what to expect, but damn, I did a whole lot more running up those switchbacks than riding. Then the descent came, and it was all worth it.
Next we headed to the I-9 factory for some wheelies, pump track, skinnies and speed trials, and got to see some seriously shiny parts! Did I mention the mobile keg?
That evening, it was over to Jeff’s pump track. The sun went down, candles were put in bags, and lined along the track, then they said “Go”. Carnage ensued, since all of our practice was still in the light, but no one got seriously hurt.
Back to the pad for more beer, and eventually, some dodge ball, and a serious game of foot down. The party went on until sometime after 4, and I think I got some bonus points (they were counting points for EVERYTHING mentioned previously btw) for the late night dance party action, then crashed hard.
Morning came way too soon, but the hangover was surprisingly mild. Must be the organic beer. Off to more trails for a mass start uphill climb (more running), then DH TT.
Finally, one more destination for the weekend, the Caldwell Ranch, for the DH short track, awesome BBQ, and a lake jump contest.
Most of the contenders were from the Asheville area, and Pisgah breeds some awesome riders. I really am still not quite sure how I pulled it off, but I won the title. Justin and Beth really pulled this one together well. I’ll feel this one all week, and will be back next year to defend the title.
Eric, MBAMBW
