Nat'l Park(ing) Day was originated by an art collective in SF and is now happening all over. Parking spaces are taken back for the day and turned into parks, art installations, etc- "the day when urban dwellers all around the world reclaim on-street parking spaces for purposes more creative and life-affirming than private motor vehicle storage". Streetsblog has some good (New York-centric) videos, photos, and info: http://www.streetsblog.org/2007/09/24/streetfilms-parking-day-2007/. The City of ATL is participating this year:
Atlanta, contact Karen Clarke.
The City of Atlanta will host a Park(ing) Day park at City Hall, involving local artists, farmers, and a demonstration solar panel. It is a collaborative effort between, the Office of Sustainability, the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs, and Park Pride.

They're supposed to be setting up at City Hall, the Varsity, and Whole Foods in Buckhead. Not sure how it will be, hopefully worth checking out.
