FM2408 race planning update

Here is a quick post to update the FM community about developments in planning the Faster Mustache 24 Hour Race. Remember, most of the details below are not official. I just want to open this stuff up to you guys for discussion.

First, the venue: we are happy to announce that we will be having the race at Johnny's Pizza for the 3rd time. This is a great place to have a race, as you know, and they are excited to make this the most awesome race yet.

Second, the route. We are toying with a route that goes from Johnny's, up the path to north ave, out to NoBrakes, down to East Atlanta, through Grant Park to Castleberry Hill, and then back to Johnny's. Checkpoint possibilities, just to illustrate the route, could be: Videodrome --> NoBrakes --> 13 Roses Tattoo --> Grant Central Pizza --> Elliott St. Pub and Deli --> Back to Johnny's. It might look this.

Next, the theme. We are working on a theme that combines patriotic, super hero, secret agent, and urban soldier themes. Snake Eyes (G.I. Joe) has been a big inspiration. With this theme, we are going to incorporate more "mission" style tasks into the race. You will receive your missions throughout the 24 hour race - non-racing team members will complete these missions to earn time bonuses. To go with this theme, we have worked out this flyer: (THIS IS BETA! ARTWORK AND SPONSORS HAVE NOT BEEN FINALIZED!)

The last thing is sponsors. The folks shown on that poster are who we are talking to now. We could use some more though! If you or your company wants to donate prizes, please let me know!

Thats all. I can't wait to hear what y'all think!

one more thing!!

We have also decided to add a 2-person team category. This should make it easier for out of town folks to put together a team without going solo. It should also create some interesting new competition!

nice

Once again, y'all have done a great job with all of this. I'm excited about the 2-person category...

oh lordy

that poster is wicked.

Nicely done!

...

especially with a G.I.Joe influenced theme, should i even bring up a Dreadnok return to battle?

the venue, route, sponsors, graphics all look good!

also - i noticed on another board (DLV) that there are solo and 5 person team categories. are we limited to 5 this year?

kurt's picture

dreadnok's

Yeah I was definitely thinking about the dreadnoks. But mostly Snake Eyes.

That was not completely accurate - we will allow teams of 4-6 again this year.

Q's

Honest question: How is that route going to look at night? I am not completely familiar with that area. Will be able to get crack fairly easily?

Not so honest question: That route is near the zoo. What if an animal escape happens. If we get eaten by a tiger or something, how does that affect the rest of the team?

What if an animal escape happens?

The #1 reason I got the hell out of Grant Park.

answer to honest question?

Pretty much any Atlanta neighborhood can be scary at night, but it has been brought up that the area around braves stadium is especially hazardous. Does anyone have any bad experiences they can share? Or does anyone want to go "check it out" late one night?

.

my buddy crazy fast erik lives in people's town next to the stadium. not that bad imho. common sense applies: don't fuck with people and don't leave anything out in sight that you want to keep.

there are much worse neighborhoods. we just never hear about them. Ride all the way down North Ave past GT and past the Dome -- way scarier to me.

bad ass flyer, kurt. i'm not sure how, but the design team (whoever that is - you or you + others) raises the bar each year.

English Ave/Bankhead Represent!

The route looked fine to me. North Summerhill and Castleberry Hills by the lofts at night... not an issue (ghost town past sundown).

Now Ellis/Freedom crossing the connector... that is a bit rough (motor vehicle traffic routinely exceeds 55mph on that stretch of road). But, it's also not the fastest route between Elliot St Pub and Johnny's. YMMV.

I-20

I was mostly concerned about the area around I-20. Not to piss anybody off, but we do have some female riders who will be out late at night. The route from the tattoo shop to the deli also seems a little complicated for people from out of town. Almost 20 turns? However there are more people with better knowledge of the area than me. I would be up for riding the route, once the swimming portion of the Olympics concludes.

And yes, there are a few faster routes.

This is how I would do it...

This is how I would do it... if I were racing. Of course this map API doesn't have a few of the secret shortcuts I would use along the way.

you

you could get crack around nobrakes or eliot street but I feel that you would have to be really connected in that particular neighborhood to get it easily, boulevard or hell even 5 points are much better buyers markets.

Cool poster! I wish I could

Cool poster! I wish I could do this race...
I have already juggled my weekends around for other events with my Ex.
I might be able to come out to see some action during the day w my kids.

Sponsors

If you are at any of those places (Outback, Aaron's, Cosmos, Johnny's, AVX, etc) let them know you appreciate their support of the race.
