Question:

Didn't I read somewhere on here that algae is responsible for the brunt of our planet's oxygen replenishment?

Word. Sort of.

Word. Sort of. Phytoplankton.

Do we have someone here that can explain the differences between algae and phytoplankton?

I might live with somebody

I live with somebody who might. I'll send her an email.

i believe phytoplankton are

i believe phytoplankton are a subset of plankton which are themselves a subset of algae. so technically, you're both right. one was just more right than the other.

It's actually the other way around

"Phytoplankton" is a big grouping that includes green algae, cyanobacteria (blue-green algae), golden-brown algae, diatoms, and dinoflagellates (sometimes responsible for Red Tides). It's not a taxonomic grouping as it encompasses both prokaryotes (no nucleus) and eukaryotes (separate nucleus). They all have photosynthesis in common, but some have more bacterial characteristics while others have more plant-like characteristics.

/random biology factoid.

Yeah, but growing some more in a bucket isn't going to stop O2

production. That would be like saying that the fact we have worms in a bin in the house composting stuff is DEPLETING THE WORLD'S WORM POPULATION!!!111!!eleven!

I wasn't clear on that point

I was unclear as to whether they were growing their own or harvesting from the wild, which is why I asked.
