Sidewalk "cyclists"

Idiots

but nature takes care of its own. There is a reason why it should not be done and sooner or later they are likely to step off the gene pool.

Personally, I've been considering a campaign of stickers, and yelling from my bicycle, "GET OFF THE SIDEWALK!".

They're fine with me if they're going as slow as someone walking.

If they're going faster than someone walking, they likely have a planned date with the underside of a UPS truck and I hope they're both early!

you guys have clearly never

you guys have clearly never hucked a sweet aprin for mad air.

for shame.

pwnela's picture

it typically infuriates me

because it validates the "GET ON THE SIDEWALK" shouters. On my ride home from work a while ago there was a sidewalk-to-street-to-sidewalk-to-street-er that kept trying to get my attention at red lights. I'd planned a speech about how he was riding in the way most likely to get hit by a car, but when I had the opportunity, decided I'd rather just not talk to him at all.

God, I'm such a snob.

Teh Black Hole's picture

In the mornings I am all

In the mornings I am all over whatever is smooth enough to ride on.

Sometimes this includes the sidewalk... sometimes the road... sometimes the gravel in between buildings being built... sometimes the dirt foot path used by vagrants... sometimes your mom's face. Whatever is the fastest.

Commuting on a MTB is the best.

As gas prices continue to

As gas prices continue to rise you are going to see more and more of them. As if people in cars aren't pissed off enough now!
They get get mad at dealing with arrogant cyclists, and now they get to be angry with ignorant ones as well.
I'd say, ride up to them, give them advice, let them know that their helmet is on backwards, help them out. The big issue I am seeing now along with sidewalk riders are people on really bad roads when there is a perfectly good alternate a block over. I saw a guy going down Ponce in rushhour on a huffy/walmart type bike, backpack.. Pretty much wearing the Obama team kit. I wanted to stop and let him know all the better options for a route.
Anyway, there are lots of new cyclists/commuters out there. Help them out, teach them to commute safe and save some gas without getting killed. Its got to be scary as hell dealing with traffic if you havent ridden in it before.

I had a conversation with a cop about this. He was on a bike on the sidewalk, I was in the street at a red light. He told me that it was okay to ride on the sidewalk outside a business district. I told him to read part 'b' of the same law. (it was all a good natured exchange) Just wish I didn't have to teach law to the police.

I see 2 types:

1) Fun Time Newbie: (Va Highlands, Cabbage town) It's summer time and gas is high and they see all sorts of cool kids doing it, and want to join in on the fun. But they don't want to get on the big scary road. If you attempt to educate them they'll think you're a bike snob. Don't fear, they'll only ride until it's cold again or they fall and scrape their knee.

2) Homeless Bums: (everywhere) They're just trying to get on the marta.

clif's picture

I'm almost always against

But sometimes when the traffic is wicked and the lanes are tight its one of the only ways to get through in reasonable time, save riding on the wrong side of the double yellow. Still, I find it more dangerous than riding in the road.

Though stop signs are set back from crosswalks (marked and unmarked), I have never, I repeat, never seen someone in a car stop short of the crosswalk for a pedestrian. Don't get me started on driveways.

Put me down for a "do what ya gotta do." Let's be honest. We've all skirted lights by riding into the crosswalk and onto the sidewalk before making a left "turn."

Alex's picture

actually...

no. The sidewalk thing is a sacred cow of mine.

Dfunk's picture

So does that mean you eat it?

Because I know you eat cows.

Sacred cows make the best burgers.

Beats me but if they can

Beats me but if they can paint all those billboards I am sure they could flip a burger.

Silly!

Those cows did not really paint the billboards. That is an illusion. Workman do the painting. The cows just have to be able to climb up the ladder and stand there during their shift.

Cows are like your boss

for being up so early. If it had slept in it would still be alive today.

douchingtons

I yell at them. As Pamela said, they're making life harder for those of us who do ride on the road because soooo many drivers think the sidewalk is where we belong. Brrrrrnt.

What about dorks with no

What about dorks with no lights at night?

Dfunk's picture

Can't yell at them if ya

Can't yell at them if ya can't see 'em.

Teh Black Hole's picture

Wait.. what? Please tell me

Wait.. what? Please tell me you are advocating riding without lights.

Dfunk's picture

Of course not...

Just saying that if they're riding without lights, they're harder to spot. It stands to reason that if you can't see people because they don't use lights at night, you won't be able to yell at them because you won't even know they're there in the first place. Thank you for ruining my joke by making me explain it.

Teh Black Hole's picture

Sry :( That makes sense.

Sry :(

That makes sense. I've seen a lot of these types of people as of late.

The bare minimums are a rear reflector (free from Sopo) and a front light (AA Rayovac from a drug store for $3).

Dfunk's picture

Sok

From the standpoint of legality, I agree with you. But from the standpoint of effectiveness, I'm not so sure. Remember those knog Frog lights that were like $15 a pair? Remember how people kept getting hit at night while using them because they gave a false sense of security? We should do some research and determine the cheapest pair of lights that actually works.

Teh Black Hole's picture

True dat. Jeff did the

True dat. Jeff did the light shootout at Sopo last fall... but I'm not sure what the outcome was....

theothergraham's picture

Well, in my opinion, Jeff

Well, in my opinion, Jeff has a great system for commuters, but it's not for everybody. It's a bit large and complicated for most people. Not to say it's terribly difficult, but it's significantly more work than buying a light and screwing it on, and it's not easy to move from one bike to another. He's running a 12V system with one large battery to which are wired many lights of various types. If I recall correctly, he recharges that battery at least once, but I think twice, every day.

I've recently become a fan of the Planet Bike Superflash, which isn't the cheapest thing around but it is very bright, and relatively small and light.

As far as front lights go, I've got the CatEye HL-EL520, which is bright enough to actually help me see the road in otherwise unlit areas. chaddb has the larger CatEye HL-EL530, which is staggeringly bright. When I'm in front of him it looks like a car is coming up behind me.

Jeff's picture

My 2 cents worth.

12v DIY: Cheap, bright, heavy, reliable and I had a family's worth of bikes to light. Still using it but I am now considering other options.

Current research: Multi-watt Cree-type LED lights powered by hub generator fed through a rechargeable battery buffered circuit. You have light all the time (riding or stopped) and you never have to remember to recharge the batteries. Plus the option to recharge devices through a USB port. All DIY.

What I have seen and liked: I don't have one, but think the Superflash is a good buy--very bright and inexpensive. For headlights, I think you need at the very least a 1 watt LED or 10 watt halogen.

You have to see this triple Cree I setup. It gives HID a run for the money (figuratively and literally).

i'd like to see/talk to you about it. I have a flashlight that uses a Cree 7090 XR-E LED and i love it.
