I'm sure there are a few of these threads floating around. But I'm lazy, so I'll just start another. I think that well....um...... I'm considering buying a helmet. I really fucking hate to wear the damn things because they're such an annoyance. But I'm here on foreign streets, riding on clipless pedals for the first time and am just worried about it. I tipped over at a light the other day. Just like I said I wouldn't when I started riding on these damn things, and it scared me a bit. What if I needed to quick put a foot down or make an emergency stop and I couldn't get out of the pedals in time. Anyway...... the point is that I hate helmets. But I need one. Which one should I get.
I remember some article a while back about a dude who got his head run over in a Giro helmet and escaped relatively unscathed. Maybe I should get one of those. But what I'm really worried about is comfort, keeping my head as cool as possible, and not looking like I want to kick my own ass and take my own lunch money at the end of the day.

I've got the Bell Citi helmet. I like it.
Bell Metropolis is more expensive, similar styling. (Metropolis has small/med/large while Citi is one-size only)
(I think the helmet looks less silly if you remove the front 'visor') Get something you like the looks of, otherwise you'll never wear it.
Summer time: Bell Sweep
Summer time: Bell Sweep R
Winter time/drunk nights: Pro-Tec Skateboard Helmet for that full-head multiple impact protection while keeping the head warm.

Bell and Giro are owned by the same company, I think. Rudy Project makes nice equipment.
I like the Giro Atmos.
they're all the same
get one you like. they all have to pass the same certifications to be sold in the US. and with more expensive helmets you're paying for lower weight and more vents (cost versus retail on helmets is ridiculous).

What I found is that if you buy a "fast looking" helmet, you'll want to wear it more often. These guys look way faster than P. O.
besides, i thought you already had a helmet
either way, be warned of people trying to sell you "novelty helmets". they won't protect you against anything. case in point:

"The adverse effect of this aerodynamic shape is that the wedge at the back of the helmet tends to deflect and rotate the helmet on the head when impact occurs there ... probably deflecting the helmet to expose the bare head to impact, and at worst ejecting the helmet completely from the head."
"We believe that the ideal surface for striking a road resembles a bowling ball: hard, smooth and round."
These articles definitely influenced my helmet purchase.

to support your assertion:
Rotational accelerations are much more deadly/dangerous to
cyclists than linear ones. So the longer the moment arm you attach to your noggin, the more likely you'd be better off riding bareback
