I ordered a set of yellow non-machined velocity deep-v rims and I want to put a front brake on for safety because I am riding 20+ miles a day. I was wondering if anyone knows any measures I can take to prevent them from getting marked up. I am considering putting on some of those cork brake pads that people use on carbon rims. I won't be using the brakes hardly at all, they are just for emergencies because I live in the suburbs and people are idiots.

if you don't want to mar the
if you don't want to mar the rim, take the brake off. if you want to waste money, buy expensive brake pads that are designed to wear faster and make the surface even more nasty looking.
you could also install a roller brake (instead of a rim brake) on the front wheel.
.
get a machined rim
I already got the
I already got the non-machined. The cork pads aren't too expensive. I'll never use these brakes other than in extreme emergencies. -Patrick Goral
Too bad dude. You could put
Too bad dude. You could put on another rim for your commutes but then you won't match... SCHUCKS!
They're powder coated right?
They're powder coated right? I don't think you don't have much to worry about.
I have a set of black Rhynolites on my commuter and I haven't worn off the anodizing yet (after 500+ miles).

mine must be radioactive :)
mine must be radioactive then, or made of adamantium :)
im seriously wondering tho.
im seriously wondering tho. kinda pissed me off when i got all black everything and wham, silver bling.

sounds like brake pads are the difference. (my guess).
Chris, Seth, what are y'all using?
NOS XT canti pads on the

stock ones on avid shorty
stock ones on avid shorty 4s. quick googling didn't tell me whats on there and busy with work stuff atm.
I mean, I will not be using
I mean, I will not be using the brake much anyways but I was just checkin up-Patrick Goral
you could just buy a second
You could just buy a second wheel and get a cheapish hub and a machined rim. You probably don't want to be rolling around on your nice stuff if you are concerned about idiots. I know of one kid who was glad he was hit on his "braking wheel" not his nice shinny DV.
Some lame words of advice: Save your bling for when people are going to be looking at it. Those "idiots" [in cars, i assume] aren't going to know what a machined/non machined rim is. I can't imagine some soccer mom saying "yo look at that poser with his machined front rim."
Ha.
Yea... that kid's got street smarts.
Too bad his ass just keeps getting run over...

victor had a non-machined deep v
and i think it took a long long time before you could notice the effects of braking on it.
wel his is dark blue
and his braking surface was all black from the brakes almost immediately. you couldnt really tell on the dark rims, but on yellow rims it'll look kinda bad really quick
I solved it, i just manned
I solved it, i just manned up and didn't put brakes on. haha-Patrick Goral
That is what I was hoping
That is what I was hoping you would say.
pssh.
That isn't what I was hoping...
If you think you will "need one in emergencies" you better have one (or two) on at all times.
I get so nervous seeing kids half way out in an intersection unable to stop where they were "manning up" by riding brakeless.
Um, real men make it a point to live or whatever.
Forget about how your $65 rim looks.
half the kids out there
half the kids out there should get a freewheel. Fixies only look cool when you know how to ride them. Otherwise, coasters and freewheels look the same

I've been running and road biking for about 9 years and I think I've got it all right.
I already know everything,
that's why I ask questions on forums.
it's really ok...
i run a front brake on a
i run a front brake on a deep-V and i regret not looking into it more first. my pink rim is def not as hot as it was - nice black streak, and even some chips off the powdercoat. it's only been a month. but whatever. it's gonna turn into a machined rim...
i wish i had bought the expensive cork pads b/c i only use my brakes for emergencies, but right now, i still have daily emergencies b/c i've only ridden fixed for a month & the skidz ain't good enough yet to save my ass at high speeds. oh, and the reason i refuse to switch out to a machined rim is b/c i'm vain, and i want my bike to be cute constantly, & i don't like how machined looks. well... and i don't want to buy another rim. i think that once i become proficient at skidz & have money to throw away (never), i'll switch 'em out.
anyways, - if you think you might need a brake, invest in the pads, have a brake in case, be prepared to use it, but don't use it for shits&giggles to protect the hotness of deepV-dom.
.
it's not you. no skid is sufficient to save one's ass at high speeds.
now if someone could to a
now if someone could to a fully modulated fixie stop ala ABS... i'd pay money to see that.
no skid
will make you fly over your handlebars when you freak out and want to stop too fast either.... if the choice is stop on a DIME or hit something, skidding or braking are equally shit in my opinion. dodging is way better.
.
If you're flying over your handlebars, you're doing it wrong.
I have no problem -- for fun or out of necessity -- applying the front brake enough to safely lift the rear wheel off the ground and come to a stop. This is the fastest rate at which a bicycle can safely stopped.
i have no problem
skidding to a stop when needed - for fun or necessity. you do you, i'll do me. arguing about how people chose to ride a bike is RETARDED. i wonder how many times I can use that word in one thread.

i love this thread
i think that once i become proficient at skidz & have money to throw away (never), i'll switch 'em out
right, because burning through a tire every two weeks is waaaay cheaper than buying a 100$ wheel once, and 4$ brake pads maybe once a year.
you need to listen to Clark Howard more.
This thread makes me feel old.
And more and more I'm understanding how blogs like bikesnobnyc can exist.

not even
the skiddiest McSkiddertons wear through a tire in two weeks. I skid plenty, and I have to get a new tire from running over shit that leaves big holes in my tread as often as I have to from skidding (which is typically every several months)
.
A tire being prone to puncture is a sure sign its worn out.
whatever
the "you have to replace tires" argument is retarded. that was the only point being made.
Out of curiosity:
How often do you have to replace tires? Do you know approximately how much mileage you can get out of a pair?
in my experience
it depends on the tire. i had a pair of crappy $10 tires that i bought from nashbar, and they wore out pretty quickly. i spent more money on the next pair, and they're holding up much better.
also if you ride a fixed gear and skid a lot, your tires won't last nearly as long.

Maxxis Detonators... the worst.
Are those at all comparable
Are those at all comparable to the Vittoria 120 TPI Rubino Pro Techs?
The rubinos are a nicer
The rubinos are a nicer feeling tire. The zaffiros are the Vittoria bargain tires. The rubinos are probably a bit softer. But that's the price for a more supple ride. They also have a folding bead instead of a wire one. I got about 4,000 miles out of mine on my road bike. No idea how long they'll last under frequent emo-skidz. I recently stepped up to the open paves and they feel even nicer.
Hm, well I tend to stay away
Hm, well I tend to stay away from the "emo-skidz". I mean I am riding brakeless, but I have just gotten pretty good at quickly slowing down with resistance, or just weaving through whatever comes my way. I really enjoy the tires but I can tell from the few skids I've had to do, they will wear out quick.
The Zaffiros were 60tpi and
The Zaffiros were 60tpi and made from rather unsupple rubber (read: did not wear away quickly) with an aramid liner. Fantastic urban street tire.
