Just so you know, a couple of friends of mine are riding RAAM in June this year on fixed-gear bikes. They could use your support. Nice jersey available: http://www.kaisercycling.com/

I want to do RAAM, but I want to do it geared. Badass all around.

Absolutely Nuts!

I know tremendous cyclists who have been physically destroyed by RAAM on 4 people teams. (Granted they were all on teams that were competing to win or place well.) A 2 person team would be incredibly hard. To do it on fixies is just nuts! I wish them luck, but I would bet they do not finish.

How many bikes are they going to carry? The gears needed to go up the mountain are very different from the ones they need to go down the mountain.

agreed.

But this largely depends on the route. A lot of passes in the Rockies never really get that steep compared to gaps on the east coast. So if that have SAG the whole way and can swap out wheels on whim, who knows?

Want to bet?

Jeff Bauer would like to propose that they will finish and has offered a wager to you, Timothy. If you are interested email me at tmlawtonatsw-sn.com. ;-)

There is nothing that can't be done

with a good deal of perseverance, pain tolerance, and willpower bordering on madness or stupidity. I would not bet against someone who is willing to even entertain the idea. Good luck to Jeff and those who are crazy enough to be his riding mates.

Four Salsa Casseroll bicycles will be provided by Gran Fondo Cycles, their sponsor in Nashville.

I've had the pleasure of

I've had the pleasure of riding many brevets and being completely lost with Kevin and Jeff. They will do well but as others have mentioned RAAM literally sucks the life out of superhuman people.
Last year a good friend of mine was pulled out due to literally drowning in the blood that was pooling in his lungs.
He had been coughing up blood for 2 days before he was pulled from the race. This is the guys who holds to course record at Sebring with 516 miles.. solo with no drafting! Thats just shy of 22mph for 24 hours straight!
Watch John Schlitter this year. He's from Tampa. This will be his 4th RAAM but first solo attempt.

Awesome

Linda Demma, a local rider and Sorella member, completed RAAM with Team Type 1 in 2006. http://www.teamtype1.org/team/index.html

FM project, anyone?

It would be awesome to get a team to do a relay RAAM ride, eventually leading to a non-relay event one day. It would be even better if we could get a co-ed team to do it.

Dfunk's picture

I'm down.

How long are the relays expected to take? If I'm not expected to ride more than 100 miles a day every few days, I'd be down.

I imagine you'd want to do close to one of these a day to finish in less than 3 months.

I figured I could be the handicap or something.

When John did 4 man RAAM

When John did 4 man RAAM they took pulls ranging from 10 minutes to 1 hour. On the mtn passes the did the 10 minute pulls. At night they did 1 hour pulls so that they could get 2.5ish hours of sleep. It was pretty much full TT pace and heart rate on the bikes.

Would you do it

if we had a first aid kit (bandaids, leeches, duct tape & peroxide) and a nice shiny shovel to scape you off the road with?

C'mon, be a trooper.

Its amazing what they have pulled off.
My friend John Schlitter is leading the mens 50-59 group!
This is his 4th RAAM but first time going solo.

DANG

They went from CA to MD in 7 days, dang!!! Looks like they're in first for their category.

They are the first fixed

They are the first fixed team to ever do RAAM.
Since they were riding fixed bikes they were allowed to start with the solo racers. The reaminder of the teams started a few days later. I wont be surprised if some of the other teams post a fast race.
Just completing RAAM with two RAAM rookies is something huge, to do it fixed, is insane!

DANG again

Hope they can still walk after this.

Jeff and Kevin finished last night around 8:30!

That's just crazy. We barely averaged more than that this morning in over ~2 hours :)

My hats off to them! Simply

My hats off to them! Simply an amazing feat that they just pulled off. Unless your an ultra junkie you may not realize that what they just did was history in the making. I've been racing 24 hour events and ultras since 1986. What they just accomplished is difficult to comprehend and truly get your head around.

FM RAAM Team?

Anyone, anyone? That and the Paris-Brest-Paris are my wet dreams (tee hee, I said Brest).

griggey's picture

i was talking to a coworker about this...

I want to do this before I die. How soon, I'm not sure.

Hey if you want to do PBP

Hey if you want to do PBP then you need to start riding some brevets. I go to Bonifay FL for their series then Gainesville for that one.
You probably already know but you need to do a full series to qualify. (200,300, 400, and 600K events).
The series' now will be easier routes and get progressively more difficult until the next PBP. The idea being that you ease people into the distance now, then make the rides harder and harder each year to ramp people up to the climbing of PBP.
Of course if you can do the full GA series then you can handle the hill of PBP.
Due to a divorce, moving and blah blah blah I havent done a full brevet series in the last 2 seasons. But I have a couple of SR medals someplace!
Anyway all that crap is behind me now and its full focus on the Ultra season of 09. Jan 1 is my first 200K on the books.
If you want to carpool to FL, or over to Augusta for those rides let me know. You know Kevin and Jeff, I've ridden with and have incredible respect for those guys.. Also Kevins brother is here in Atlanta and there is a good sized Rando group here as well. If anyone else wants to do song endurance work... lets put some rides together.

Alex's picture

Can you pick me up in your car?

I live here: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=finsbury+park&sll=51....

There is a guy I know who does brevets fixed. I am going to try to do a few to see how it goes.

oh, well... maybe if I come

oh, well... maybe if I come over for a weekend of debauchery in Amsterdam I'll swing by!
I thought that you were a local around here. PBP is too amateurish you need to focus on London Edinburgh London!

IndyFan's picture

There are a couple more

There are a couple more local brevets planned this year: 100K in Rome on Aug 16 and 10 Gaps on Sep 6. www.audaxatlanta.com.

Here's a recent note from Jeff re RAAM:

See attached.

Nashville's WSMV Channel 4 News conducted an interview with Robert and me last week. It was aired yesterday and this morning:

http://www.wsmv.com/video/16753008/

Race footage provided by Robert Hendry. They cut out any mention of Kevin to focus on the local homeboy, but I'm glad they included the interview with Robert. His race comments comes across very well, while I look like I'm struggling on what to say.
