Any Southeast MTB trip suggestions?

clif's picture

My buddy Alex wants to get his brother a mountain bike trip somewhere in the southeast for his long overdue graduation from UGA. I'm a city rider and know nothing about MTB bikes, MTB trails, or where to find them. I don't know the specifics of the trip (i.e. cost, length, difficulty, date, etc). I know there are good suggestions out there - let's hear 'em!

some of us ride around here

some of us ride around here bunch. Specifics of the trip would be needed to give good advice.

singletracks.com is a good source.

"Tsali" are some of the more famous trails in the SouthEast US.

singletracks should be a big help.

Pisgah National Forest

In north Carolina is beautiful, huge, and has tons of great trails. The trails range from intermediate to "oh my fucking god". Buy this map: http://www.natgeomaps.com/ti_780.html and this book: http://www.amazon.com/Off-Beaten-Track-Mountain-Carolina/dp/0963186167
There is tons of great camping and the road riding and driving is beautiful up there too.

*edit* btw this epic MTB trip is not suitable for beginners. For more suggestions, it would be helpful to know the riding level of the participants.

Around here

Ft. Yargo is in his back yard. Dauset Forest near Jackson (home of Fresh Air Barbeque) is sweet. Blankets Creek is the standard against which others are measured. The Horse Park.

If Nimblewill Festival gets rescheduled in the fall you could introduce him to the Bull Mountain area and lots of dedicated riders.

+1 to Pisgah, near Brevard. It rains there a lot in the summer, though, accompanied by thunderstorms.

.

Jackson, GA is also home to the Sack o' Suds, as featured in /My Cousin Vinny/!

How expansive is the Horse

How expansive is the Horse Park? I did a run/bike race there last year that was unnecessarily easy. A good portion of the race was on mowed down, flat meadows (i.e. the grass around the parking lot). I almost don't want to do the race again this year because of it.

uhm. the bike course there

uhm. the bike course there was used in the olympics in atlanta. Theres a mix of horse trails and bike trails, so no idea what they get runners doing, but if 1 lap on the ~11 mile bike loop doesn't kick your ass, 2 laps definitely will.
