I'll be up there in a week, for a week. I don't think I'll pay $40 just to try it though... maybe there are hourly rates?

In BCN you register (using a spanish bank account) and they send you a card to your home address. The idea is that it is a service for a population, not tourists, and if you come to the racks and there are no bikes there, you are likely to stop using the service. Not a bad rule, when you think about it.

Tourist rates, but I am fairly certain with the Parisian system - you can pay and ride on... Last time I was in Paris, these cyclists were everywhere! It was very exciting to see. The buses, taxis, citrons, and scooters rule the streets there. Oui Oui tout de suite!
