helo. i'em neu to all this schtufff, so behr wit me. i bought a 70's era peugeot 10 speed. the shifting really doesn't do it for me, if/when it even works- so mine eyes have seen the glory of you's guy's on your fixed's gear's and singles speeds and i's was wonderin the best way to convert mine. the research i have done has lead me to believe i need some type of new back wheel and chain and some other shits. i also read on sopo bikes that it was hard to convert a peugeot and that got me down for awhile...but now im thinking im going to try it anyway. give me the clues and any hints are also appreciated. I, Bison

i converted a peugeot with a bent fork and no wheels

i bought new wheels on the ebay from nycbike and reused the original cranks. It was an old-fashioned kind where the crank and the chainring are one piece. The small ring (42tooth) lined up well so I cut off the big chainring with a hacksaw. Dana (at sopo) and I tried to fix the fork but it was hopeless, so I used a Nishiki fork they had there, cut it down, and extended the threads using a thread cutter at REI.

The 42t ring is pretty small, so it limits you a little if you want a singlespeed, because 16t is smallest freewheel they make.... but it will be super easy to get up hills. If you want fixed then you're less limited... I use a 14t cog, but they make lots of sizes, I think starting at 12 or 13. that part really depends on your riding style - but a typical suggestion is start at a 3-to-1 ratio (#teeth on crank / #teeth on cog).

Sopo is definitely the place for answers and spare parts and nice people. And if you strip decent parts off you can donate them...

If you want to spend money and not do the work yourself then go to nobrakes - they will set you up.
