Local Boys Make Good: FM MTB Team Race Journal GSC #2

Last Sunday was the second race in the Georgia State Championship Series. The race was held in Flatrock Park in Columbus, GA. Trail and weather conditions were perfect. It was a little cool in the morning and the little bit of morning dew made the trails nice and tacky to facilitate gnar-shredding. The course was very fast with very little climbing. Most of it was either tight and twisty single track or long open stretches made for mashing. We raced two laps which ended up being a little over twenty miles. X, unfortunately, was unable to race because of a broken bone in his hand, but he and Neal still made the early morning (6 AM departure from ATL) trip with Durkie and I to cheer us on. Gwyn also cheered us on and handed us water bottles before her race. BIG, BIG, MEGA-PROPS go to these guys! They were definitely an inspiration to mash harder, longer. Apparently, the cheering worked as the team had some strong finishes: Crenshaw took 1st in his category!!! I got 3rd and Kurt got 10th in our category! Durkie had a rough day, he forgot some essentials and crashed a few times but he did very well for his first mountain bike race. We all returned the favor for Gwyn and screamed our heads off during her race in which she finished 3rd!!! She is doing extremely well in her first season of mountain bike racing with a 1st place finish in the last race and now a 3rd place!!! Full results can be found here. FM is looking good in the overall points standings too. Our next GSC race is in Winder at Ft. Yargo on Sunday April 27th if anyone is interested in attending it is one of the closer races in the series. The next weekend we will be heading to Tennessee to compete in Dirt, Sweat, and Gears a 12 hour endurance race. This race is supposed to be a blast with sweet trails, beer, and shwag. See you on the skreetz!

trails

We ride Conyers Horse Park the most, but can also be found at Bull Mountain, Bear Creek, Chicopee, Pinhoti, Tanasi, Pisgah, Blankets Creek, Ft. Yargo, Dawset (sp?) and pretty much any other trail within a 5 hour drive. We also train at the velodrome and on the road, and sometimes in the skate park.
We would love to have you join us for the next trail ride. The schedule is pretty much packed with races for the next couple months, but if you are in racing shape you can join us at the next GSC race at Ft. Yargo this Sunday.
