CK needs to activate some MySQL query caching.

seems to load the comments

seems to load the comments quick, pause, then load the side bar.

thats google adds being slow

thats google adds being slow for you then. try upgrading to a paid fm account and see if that fixes it since you can turn off ads... or perhaps notice if other gads sites are loading slow too?

try upgrading to a paid fm account

*edit*
I turned on the 'hide ads' switch. No apparent difference in loading times.

k. try blocking javascript

k. try blocking javascript in your browser just for a few. Could be Google Analytics then.

Stupefying Jones's picture

disabled javascript, no

disabled javascript, no appreciable difference noticed.

added firebug for more quantitative measures.
* google-analytics rarely goes over 100ms. more typically 50-80ms.
* load times for the main node vary from 1.5 sec to 8 sec.

referring to the 'pause' i described before: it seems like a chunk of comments are loaded -- pause -- new chunk -- pause -- till all comments are loaded, then the sidebar loads.

note: this isn't so bad that I'd complain about it really. but it is noticeable from both home connection and georgia tech connection.

*edit*
new record! 20.47sec for the frontpage.

Mr Jones' observations are spot on

and I don't have the ads on.

Yahoo's Yslow

Yahoo's Yslow should help gather tangible evidence instead of anecdotal.

SOLVED

short version:

Linksys Blows. You want a switch that will do what you tell it to? Spend $2k or more. b@$t@rd$.

For the laypeople just how

For the laypeople just how was the switch bugger up?

ckdake's picture

linksys made it. for less

linksys made it.

for less laypeople: i enabled outbound (to this server) QoS at 800kbps on the port this sites server is on due to a 1.5Mbs HTTP DDoS attack on another website. (I have a 1Mb commit rate and wanted to avoid a bad bandwidth bill). After the attack dissipated, i disabled QoS on the port but apparently the QoS engine in the switch remained active and it was not obeying the per-port "enable" flag for QoS, and there is no way to remove a rule once it's been added (can change or disable). Disabling the entire QoS engine fixed the problem.

whats great is cisco owns

whats great is cisco owns linksys. the largest sticker/branding/anything on the box this switch came in was an "upgrade to cisco today" sticker.
