Earth Hour March 29th 8pm-9pm

Jacquelyn's picture

I wanted to pass along some information I received at the Greenprints Conference last week regarding Earth Hour 2008. For one hour on March 29th 8-9pm, Atlanta residents are encouraged to turn off their lights demonstrating the possibility to take action against global climate change. I think it is a unique form of collective social activism. For more information www.earthhour.org

Hopefully this will help

Hopefully this will help people realize that more concrete changes should be made as well.

the way i look at it,

the way i look at it, everyone should be turning off all their lights whenever practical. If you can afford to turn off your lights from 8-9pm on a friday and they aren't already off, then uh, WTF are you not turning them off anyways?

Because now you can feel

Because now you can feel good about yourself for doing it

ckdake's picture

and if i feel good about

and if i feel good about doing it every time i turn off a lightswitch?

Thats a change in lifestyle

Thats a change in lifestyle then. I was just poking fun at people who make themselves feel better with empty gestures.

I make sure to trap my farts

I make sure to trap my farts in reused plastic grocery bags.

Doing my part to reduce greenhouse gases and supporting the green triangle in the process (reduce, reuse, recycle).

The next step is to use them

The next step is to use them to heat your house and power electronics.

I saw the billboard at Clairmont/N. Decatur Rd.

If I just turn out my lights I won't be savin' much--CF ya' know. What if everyone turned *all* their electrical equipment off for a hour (or two or three)? The results/savings might actually be noticeable.

How much energy does it take to print and install billboards? Will they turn off the billboard lights during that hour?

Teh Black Hole's picture

or...

What if everyone turned *all* their electrical equipment on for a hour.

Just a thought... the load might be enough to force everyone into darkness for a little bit.

I thought

I thought about posting this event but I foresaw the FM backslap that's happening, hey let's all haaaaaattttttteeeeee!

I got my (second) bottle of hateraid right here?

post x2.

No hateraid needed!

For the record: being concerned about the amount of energy consumed in my household, I recently bought a Kill A Watt EZ powermeter. I have only had it monitoring my computer/router/DSL, but the results so far are interesting: my monthly cost for is only $5.61 (179 hrs;13.59 kWh) for a computer left on most nights and weekends (and a CRT also). I going to systematically move it through the house to see which appliances are drinking more than others (I have my suspicions ).

Reducing unneeded electrical use is a good thing; using traditional, energy-wasting mass media for dubious results are another thing entirely. I wish them good luck to raise awareness.

FYI, March 29

is Steve McQueen night on TCM.

Highly recommended are The Thomas Crown Affair at 11pm and at 3am Love With The Proper Stranger.

I don't mind...

...taking the heat, calories, shit!, energy. Damnit, I just can't win, someone has to post the granola "save the world" energy thread. I am surprised no one touted, "I power my house with my bike," maybe next time...

Will it matter?

"Because climate change is essentially a political problem, and the language of politics is symbolism. Just because an act is symbolic doesn't mean it empty. The only way to truly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, to take the pressure off global warming, is an international regime that puts a cap and a price on climate pollution. And the only way that will happen is if politicians around the world become convinced that climate change is an issue that matters to people, one that will make them change the way they live, buy — and vote." - Time.com

making energy more expensive hurts a lot of poor people

Teh Black Hole's picture

^^^^^^

You remember what I was saying at lunch today Roger... about widening class gaps and the destruction of middle classes?

I can think of a type of power that is cheap and low on carbon emissions... but I'm not allowed to talk about it.

roger3b's picture

yes

shit! you got me, i'm trying to hurt poor people

also, advocating reduction in energy use does not mean advocating alternative energy

durkie's picture

good call

"also, advocating reduction in energy use does not mean advocating alternative energy"

this is what i find most scary about alternative energy - when it becomes viable, environmentalism is going to take a huge hit.

say solar really takes off and becomes cheaper than coal. if everything is solar-powered, why be mindful of your activities? why bike commute? why not drive an escalade? why not pollute, since the energy required to clean it up is so cheap and plentiful? etc.

growing green?

raising heard animals for food is the most destructive thing any one can do for the environment, agriculture is the second (head animals only come in first because they require a lot of agriculture to be fed). It is impossible to keep the earth alive and feed our current population, estimates of a sustainable human population range from 1-3billion people depending on factors accounted for, either way at least 2.5 billion of us got to die. conclusion the earth is fu*ked.

some one might say "yeah but X% of food is thrown away" let me save you the time, it does not matter, that food is still produced, and humans are just as likely to have a global change to a system that hands out food evenly with out the current waste as we are to kill at least 2.5billion of us to stop climate change. Although the war fought to bring about the change of even sharing of food would probably do a fair job of reducing the population, so keep trying.

ahh fuck, google wants to hurt poor people too

Did you read the blurb:

Did you read the blurb:

"As to why we don't do this permanently - it saves no energy; modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display."

Doin' it for teh LULZ

understand

this is mostly about awareness

I know.

I know.

That makes this:

So much more funny.

"We believe that there is

"We believe that there is value in the concept because even if the energy savings are small, they all add up. Secondly we feel that seeing Blackle every time we load our web browser reminds us that we need to keep taking small steps to save energy."

doesn't hurt, might help.

i find it funny

that this earth hour is advertised in lights at marta underground stations...

I also like that the

I also like that the creative loafing presented several statistics in its blurp about earth hour:

27,200,000: tons of CO2 emitted in 2007 by Plant Scherer
48: since 2002, number of states with lower increases in CO2 emmissions that Georgia.
160,000: minimum number of people, businesses, and municipalitie turning off all lights for one hour on March 29 for Earth Hour.
16,400: U.S. home fires caused by candles between 2000 and 2004.
