brake lever questions

Has anyone tried to operate a dual pivot road brake caliper with a mountain bike brake lever(which normally operates a linear pull MTB brake)?

Also, do you know of a company that makes a MTB brake lever that is removable without having to slide it on/off the bars (i.e. hinged clamp like the standard cross lever)?

Also, can cross levers be setup to pull either direction? For example, Sheldon Brown shows cross levers in which actuating the lever moves the cable housing while the cable itself is held stationary: http://www.sheldonbrown.com/harris/brake-levers-drop.html. However, I currently have my bike setup such that actuating the lever moves the cable and the cable housing is held stationary.

Don't know about finding

Don't know about finding brakes that have a hinge on the clamp... but:

Per the cross levers, I think that is how they are designed to work... ie, move the housing and not the cable. With the drop bar levers added, they move the cable (and not the housing)

I think you may have already

I think you may have already given me one of these =P.

Shimano also makes a line of

Shimano also makes a line of flat-bar levers to work with caliper brakes.

Cross levers are the only ones I know of with a hinged clamp. I'll ask around.

What do you mean by "either direction?" If you mean having a right hand lever control a front break, etc, then yes. I have a right hand lever for my front brake on my track bike. It's a cane creek crosstop hooked up to a dia camp single pivot (Thanks again, ckdake.) and it works just fine.

gold finger?

gold finger and paul components make hinged levers for flat bars or the top of drops that pull an MTB style cable (meant for BMX brakes), i used a gold finger 1 finger lever, and shrimano road brake on my working bike, had a problem with cables snapping but that might have been just my fault.

i rock a cross lever on my daily ride, it moves the housing not the cable, the way it should be
