Bikes To Rwanda - Funraising event @ Octane Coffee

Octane will be hosting an alley cat race and a spoke card art show, April 12th, 2008.
More race details coming soon!!! In addition to the main event, we will be hosting events all of April to educate people on fair trade, sustainability, and equity through coffee.
But...
We need artists to contribute spoke cards for the show!
If you'd like to contribute, email me (alyssa) at atlbikestorwanda@gmail.com

Any medium, any quantity, any format. Artists will donate cards that will be sold at the event, all proceeds from sales will go to Bikes To Rwanda. Ideal size= 6 x 6 inches and under, though this is not limiting or restrictive.

Deadline: Saturday, March 29th. Octane will laminate and price the spoke cards. If you already have some cool cards from other events, places or races, and would like to donate them, great! There more, the better!

Spoke cards will be displayed on bike wheels throughout the shop, from April 1st-12th.
If you would like to make multiple prints, we will have a merch table set up the night of the 12th, for extra cards and other event related items.

What is Bikes To Rwanda?
Bikes To Rwanda (http://www.bikestorwanda.com/) provides cargo bikes to co-operative coffee farmers in Rwanda. The goal is to improve quality of life in these communities through a bike workshop and maintenance program that provides transportation resources for basic needs and enhances production of quality coffee.

Our goal at Octane is to raise enough money to facilitate the construction of a bike maintenance shop for a coffee farm in Rwanda. With your help, we can do it!

things

As this pertains to FM:

1.) racers: bike race coming up. get training. I'm helping put on this race so you can guarantee that I'm going to make it a good one! More details to come as we solidify them.

2.) spoke card makers: if you want to create something for this event (one-offs or limited run production) then we'll print, laminate, and sell them on April 12th.

3.) party people: April 12th will be the art opening party for the spoke cards exhibit. Expect some drinking and music and chance to buy rather unique spoke card artwork.

4.) progressive people: events all month long promoting fair trade.

More Details

prizes and race format: 6-9 checkpoints, probably any-order-you-like. Complete all checkpoints to win. Finish at Octane. There will be 1-3 5 lb coffee bags at each stop for the first rider(s) to pick up and carry to the finish. Each bag will have a small prize or time bonus.

This race format will allow a lot more people to win prizes. Especially people who plan ahead and decide not to "shoot the moon" by trying to win outright. The fastest person (M and F) will win the biggest prizes.

Prizes will be announced as we secure them.

www.octanecoffee.com is the new home for all "official" info regarding the race and entire month of activities, but i'll keep all of FM updated here too.

Official rules, etc:

Hey!
The Bikes To Rwanda relay is this Saturday!
Here is some important (and hopefully) clarifying info...

-The relay will begin at Woodruff Park at 6pm sharp.
Racers should be there by 5pm to sign up. The entry fee is $10. All entry fees will go to the charity.

-Upon entry, each racer will receive a manifest, which is a list of all the checkpoints. The manifest is what will be signed at each checkpoint by the volunteer. It is the riders responsibility to keep hold of the paper. See the map for a complete list of checkpoints.

http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?ie=UTF8&hl=en&msa=0&msid=1102987630218099...

-Riders can choose whatever route they like, as long as they complete all of the blue checkpoints. The red checkpoints are optional bonus stops, and each rider who completes one of these stops will get 5 minutes subtracted per stop, for a total of 10 minutes off their final time, plus the chance to earn bonus prizes. The green markers are the start and finish of the race.

Bonus prizes will be awarded to the first rider at each stop.
