for real?

this made my day.

why's everyone so happy?

anyone know what they're actually doing to the tracks?

Jeff's picture

I wouldn't get too excited

they made a mess of the DeKalb Av./W. Howard Av crossing since last week, when they cut a 3" trench on both sides of the tracks (and across the Path), then left the debris as-is. Last year when they did maintenance work on the main RR line through Decatur/Scottdale/Clarkston, all the crossing had ballast (re: large gravel) all over the place.

They ain't thinking 'bout cyclists.

1/23/07 Update: This morning a fellow bike commuter fell on the tracks at DeKalb Av./W. Howard Av, due to the construction gravel and sign placed on the Path. He was riding with a friend, and although he didn't think he broke anything, he felt dizzy and called home for a pickup.

Work report

Can't say about Coventry. Anyone use this route?

East Lake: Good smooth asphalt run-up to tracks. Rubber mats removed. Noticeable improvement.

DeKalb Av./W. Howard: Either they aren't finished or they've left the mess that Jeff describes above. Be careful crossing this pos track.

As of Friday morning

All they have done is to add another pile of gravel and remove the construction sign. Who knows when they will work on the crossing.

HA!

Clearly, sir, you have not seen that they also installed a concealed trap door. Don't worry... you'll find it.

i found it. it's under the truck parked on the path next to the 2 mountains of gravel which also happens to be across the street from a backhoe and 2 more mountain of gravel in the MARTA parking lot.

What pajamas?

I don't even wear Channel Number 5, darling.

update!

i just watched them literally rip one of the rails out of the ground on Dekalb Ave. i'm talking about the death tracks just west of Krog!

ohman! I'm gonna have to go

ohman! I'm gonna have to go see this for myself here in a little bit. This could very well be cause for celebration of epic proportions.

re: update -- crossing near Krog

Them, as in CSX them? Or someone else, maybe the city?

I'm cautiously extremely excited! That crossing has been a huge time drain and bone trap for cyclists for forever!

I was told today by someone who'd seen it that a small section of track on the right side of the road was paved -- westbound only. Eastbound lane, which caused the most recent broken bone I've heard of, is untouched.

Anyone else seen it? Have photos?

I went by. It's a patch on

I went by. It's a patch on the north side of the tracks. I was riding in a car at the time so didn't get to inspect carefully, but it almost looks like it was just the tracks next to the road and not the ones in the road :/

yeah.

i went by later yesterday to see what all they did. it is a patch over the tracks on the westbound lane.

when i passed by earlier in the day, they had the tip of the rail in the bucket of a bulldozer that was on the road's shoulder. they lifted the bucket to rip the rail out of the ground. i guess they stopped about 4 feet into the road (it looked like the rail was bending). i figured they'd continue with the process but i didn't stick around to find out.

IndyFan's picture

Wow!

They can have new tracks down in a few hours. Ever seen the aftermath of a derailment? They hump prefabricated sections of track to the scene and snuggle them down in the ballast before you know it.

More work was done on the East Lake crossing this week. The rubber mats were put back in place. This crossing and the one on Coventry are now as smooth as a baby's butt.
