SO does the order of these matter?
The current version of the tracking system I've built seems to think so, but some people seem to prefer a "visit all the checkpoints in any order" kind of deal. Thoughts? Opinions? Any order is more like an "alleycat" but last time I checked a 24 hour endurance race isn't exactly and "alleycat" and some required order of checkpoints will make it easier for us to deal with emergencies.

+1 to order
I say don't make extra programming work for yourself and make it easier for dealing with emergencies.
FWIF, that part is only 10
FWIF, that part is only 10 lines of code -> 25 lines of code or so, so programmability isn't much of a factor. The tracking system as a whole is going to end up being ~1000 lines of code on the server side.
Lame... I got the reader
Lame... I got the reader source down to 185 lines... then there are the bash scripts... which is like 20 more.
20 lines for bash?
n00b! All I need is a baseball bat when I do it.
Well those 'some people'
Well those 'some people' would include myself.
As you well know, in the first two FM24 races visiting checkpoints in order was not a requirement. So not imposing a certain checkpoint order is keeping with tradition, plus it adds an additional element to the competition.
Its really nobodys business which routes different teams are taking, just that they satisfy the requirements of a lap, ie. touching all checkpoints.
Either way the issue should be made crystal clear long before the race, so teams can plot, plan and prepare. But insisting on a certain checkpoint order only diminishes the race by removing a competitive aspect of the race.
PS. This issue should be settled by this weekend.
You're wrong on the
You're wrong on the checkpoints in order not being a requirement in the first two.
In the first race, it was a big requirement due to the way lap verification was done.
The second year, less so, but still a requirement.
FM 24.06
"Rule #1 - This is a checkpoint race. You don't have to stick to the defined route, you only have to hit the checkpoints in order."
So yeah, it was in the rules last year. But there was no enforcement of said rule. No wai to know in what order the hole-punches had been used.
With the tracking system this year it will be possible to enforce. If direction/order is enforced, we need to make sure that is known. (yes it's in the rules, but it was in the rules last year too and not everyone realized it).
in previous years....
the checkpoint order was the logical order, with going in reverse being the only real alternate route.
this year, that's not really the case. order should be required.
the online tracking might be
the online tracking might be less useful for spectators if everybody is not checkpointing in the same order
i'm not sure what all is gonna be online, of course. if it's X team is at Y checkpoint, yeah, but if it's just completed laps then of course order within the lap is meaningless
the map would be slightly
the map would be slightly less cool with random order, but the complete laps stats woudl remain the same.
Yes. Checkpoints in order.
Yes. Checkpoints in order. Rules committee has already deliberated and decided.
Edit - Sorry Chris :(

I think giving people a wee bit of room to tweak is ok, but if teams are allowed to improvise the crap out of the route it would make it harder to out of towners. We already have traditional alleycats with that format, so seems fair to control things a bit more closely.
I am so looking forward to it that it is not funny. The Courtney is all like "arewegoingtoatlantayetarewegoingtoatlantayetarewegoingtoatlantayetarewegoingtoatlantayetarewegoingtoatlantayetarewegoingtoatlantayet"
Debate is welcome. It
Debate is welcome. It doesn't guarantee change, however.
What reason is there to impose a forced order of checkpoints? (b/c the rules say so is not a valid argument) There is no technological reason, the tracking system can work hitting the checkpoints in any order.
Personally, I don't care. I think it's pretty arbitrary to enforce the order of the checkpoints, so why do it?
Whatever the decision, the rules must match reality. ie if the rules say order is a requirement, then the tracking system should not count a lap run in reverse.
Unless
you are able to do it in reverse by pedalling backwards. That would be worth a prize all in itself... maybe a date with that German chick who rides her bike upside down (HOTNESS!).

the features are playing in/around london. good band, check them out if you can find them.
I think the reason for the
I think the reason for the checkpoints in order was:
This is a lap based race not an alleycat... albeit there are slight alleycat elements (hence the swipe type RFID and not the transponder on your bike that's read as you 'zoom zoom zoom' past an antenna... and the open course with auto traffic... and the drinking and swearing and pirate hookers)...
All years previous this was an enforced rule (especially the first year with the tickets, as to maintain error checking), so it continues to this year to maintain the spirit of this race... Suggested route, shortcuts allowed, checkpoints in order.
Also, the route this year was designed with a direction in mind, so we have to honor that. Not to mention, depending on direction, the difficulty of the laps changes drastically.
I'll get with CK and make sure the tracking system doesn't allow for out of order checkpoint --> verfication.
Since 10th street will be
Since 10th street will be officially closed during the race, the rulez committee should acknowledge this by not repressing the freedoms of us little ole racers.
This is an opportunity to let our creativity shine (like a thousand points of light?), with the added long-term benefit of helping all the new members of FM and intown learn their way around the city. This last benefit will pay dividends for the racers long after the race is a blurry memory.
js.
Sounds great! May the best
Sounds great! May the best one to find their way around this mess and still complete the checkpoints in order win!
What Chris said.
What CK said.
This year's race is shaping up to be the stuff of legend.
