Looks like a good route.
Looks like a good route. 10th street is going to be mayhem though. Dave Mathews Band plays in the park that night I'm pretty sure. So good luck to the best of the traffic warriors.
official entrance time is
official entrance time is like 3 and scheduled end of set is 11... so saturday will be chaos. you're welcome folks who wanted "more urban". and sunday will be more "traditional."
there was a lot of effort thought time and deliberation put into the choice of checkpoints. the route is roughly 40% longer than last year's with a more challenging topology.
rides will resume soon for refinement of the "official route". stay tuned.
its official...
10th along the park will be closed the day of the concert. if that means to just cars, I dunno. but either way, just keep that in mind.
oh man, this route just gets
oh man, this route just gets better and better. I LOVE IT!!
mark my words
if someone isn't careful, they're gonna fuck up and get beat down by a bunch of dmb fratties. js.
Help us Victor, you're our only hope!
Bro, you gotta protect us! You can speak "Family Guy" to them!
if only I had been able to
if only I had been able to foresee joining a facebook parody group "Riders of Brohan" would be capable of getting me into this much trouble!
I wuv you
<3
:D
no, there is another
seriously, i can get along with them to get a group project done, that's about it.
This year's route is
This year's route is hellish. I just got done riding it, and any way you cut it, hitting all the checkpoints in order, it's tough. It is reminiscent of the first year's route.
Combine the route with the facts that the DMB concert will be going on in Piedmont Park, GT has a home game that day... 10th on Friday is going to be worse than P-Tree has been in previous years.
You still are going to have the normal stuff we had every year too, like VaHi and L5P traffic.
Ride the route a couple of times before the race and commit it to memory.
Sorry guys,
I meant to make it out and scope the course, but I felt a little crazy from the heat and rode from Decatur to Roswell just for the hell of it - in the middle of rush-hour - 36 miles, hell yeah! Mad cause I missed my only Sopo window before my huge trip too. Sigh! If anyone wants to do the route tomorrow afternoon, I'll be in downtown then. Just let me know.
Funny, traffic is much more bike-friendly in rush-hour. Probably cause they can't go so fast. Thanks to the guys at P'tree Bikes for a major pick-me-up on the way!
rush hour (and 4am) are by
rush hour (and 4am) are by far the best bike times! Mountain View sucks in that aspect because I sleep at 4am and theres no grid or major artery here to get really clogged up in rush hour. Every now and then a traffic light goes out and it feels like biking back in the ATL. Back on Sunday!
yup
i pretty much hate it. i'm only riding for the tacos.
that being said, i will probably practice it a bunch. the usual progression is: identify "hill of doom" --> ride up it a bunch --> get used to it --> stop thinking while riding it --> ask self what the hell my problem was with that hill
10th on Friday? You means
10th on Friday? You means Caturday?
Is it just me
or does this route looks like it just goes aroun and around and ends up where it started. Feels like we'll be riding in circles if you ask me.
+1
The 2D map doesn't really show the 3D nature of this year's course though.
Yeah...
I tried to get an elevation profile, but wasn't able to.
b/c I'm so nice
try this
click the elevation button up top.
OUCH!
What's that there big spike around mile 3?
I need to rethink my gearing pronto.
toporoute can be funny
I think it thinks we're going over a building or something. ignore the spike.
by the by
every 10th lap of a team should be this
Confused
Does that mean that the route changes for every 10th lap?
no no no no no no
that was just a silly suggestion that WILL NOT be taken seriously.
but i like the idea b/c E. Morningside is not a trivial addition to the route (two or three of the better hills in the city)
This route doesn't need more
This route doesn't need more hills.
Your request is analogous to a request that corn flakes contain more corn.
that's why I called it
that's why I called it silly, silly.
Morningside - noooo!!!
That road is the bane of my training existence. I live on N.Decatur so I know those four hills intimately - I don't wish to get to know them for 24 hours.
Someone brought this up to
Someone brought this up to me...
Checkpoints in order... same as the previous years.
(Really you should hit them in order anyhow, b/c it's the fastest way around the course)
From last year... it still applies to this year:

this afternoon...
Anyone up for scoping the route this afternoon? I'd go on saturdays but I work, and next tues I'll be biking to Asheville, NC.
Just for good Measure.
Just for good Measure. Mapmyride.com faster mustache 24.07 route.
Schweet!
Schweet!
about the route
jic you didn't know, there are cars along this route
i decided to give it a practice run on tues night and got hit by a van turning into me from the opposing direction
three and a half days in the hospital later and i now have plates in my left arm, a bent frame, and little to no use of my left arm
crud
: (
damn
that's awful. Bike injuries are the worst, and that sounds like one of the more worse injuries I've heard lately. But you'll still be good for FM.24.07, right? heh heh...groan!
Please clarify
Is the route set in stone or do we just have to hit the checkpoints in order?
Checkpoints in order.
Checkpoints in order.
Yes, checkpoints in order...
Yes, checkpoints in order... same as all the other years.
Last year we didn't have a way to enforce it... this year we do... and we are. If you do a lap out of order your lap won't even show up via the tracking SW.
note that you can fix your
note that you can fix your errors, so the following would show up as a lap:
1 2 4 3 4 5 6
Yes
But.... 1 5 2 3 4 6 won't work. I tried it today, and was both satisfied AND disappointed.
and yeah. dam this thing is
and yeah. dam this thing is the hotness. I think you all will be pleasantly surprised come race day.
I know I was pleasantly
I know I was pleasantly surprised to find out I could learn enough C++ in seven days to poop out the app for the readers.
good job sir!
good job sir!
which reader(s) are you
which reader(s) are you using for testing? the phidget or the other ones?
The phidgets ones.
The phidgets ones.
a word to the wise and an opinion
you should stay off 10th street at all costs. With DMB and the GA Tech game, Saturday nights are also retarded @ Compound and people are drunk as fuck racing up and down that street near Octane & Ga Tech in their SUVs and Honda Accords.
With that said, it is extremely dangerous to put yourself at risk riding in that area from 11pm-3am. I am not a fan of that part of the route.
What he said.
Just stay home kids. 12" cog will be happy taking 1st place.
Don't
give away our secret plan!
1st place in the sissy race
1st place in the sissy race maybe
More like...
1st place in the taint punching competion.
My shoes velcro
My shoes velcro
I was thinking the big
I was thinking the big problem in this route is going up from 75/85 to Peachtree. You are climbing that hill with a bunch of lost Cobb/Gwinnett people who were just driving 80 and immediately encounter YOU struggling up a steep hill covered in dropped cement, holes, grates, sewer lids etc.
Ah yes... but you never have
Ah yes... but you never have to take 10th... if you know teh sekrets.
my secret was gonna be
my secret was gonna be octane -> 8th / hemp / furst / 5th / 6th but it turns out Ga Tech apparently doesnt like people who live west of Ga Tech and fenced them out. so i am gonna try 10th / hemp /furst .... and see if it's any better, because 10th really really sucked. i may also try 14th since we are headed all the way up to 12th anyway. if you have any other sekrets i will extract them with tequila
hmm, online mapping thinks
hmm, online mapping thinks 14th, spring, 13th, crescent 12th gets you to skate escape in 1/100 mile LESS than 10th. very interesting.
now if only there were a way to get back to juniper without that long block of climbing at 9%
crescent on a saturday night
oh boy!
oh. bars there? crap
oh. bars there? crap
Plus 12th is 1-way the wrong
Plus 12th is 1-way the wrong way west of Peachtree.
the parking lot aint
the Petrus parking lot aint
and by the way Ga Tech, why
and by the way Ga Tech, why would you build such a nice ped/bike bridge over 75/85 at 5th but then block everybody but your student ped/bikes from using it efficiently? or did i miss something?
?
what are you talking about? anyone can use the 5th St. bridge.
anyone can use the 5th st
anyone can use the 5th st bridge, but to get to it from west of campus (from the west side of the Marietta Street barricade) you have to go up to 10th or down to north dont you? by the time you're at 10th or north, going back to 5th makes no sense in most cases (unless you are headed to the biltmore or something)
it doesnt matter much for peds i guess because that'd be a very long walk by ATL standards but for cyclists it really stinks. it's a pretty safe way across, but the lack of access from the west side (that i know of anyway) means it practically has "reserved for GT" stamped on it
westside
I do wish one day tech would open their westside more (tear down fences, not build roads). I believe right now they're thinking safety first?
(this is OT, OS!)
meh.. safety would be
meh.. safety would be letting bicyclers cross their campus and use the 5th street ped/bike bridge!!
i think they are less worried about actual safety and more concerned about something else such as keeping the westside neighborhoods down so expansion can occur in that direction at a lower cost when needed
that would be
that would be genius then!
hmm
if yr on marietta, you can cut over Tech Pkwy to get to Ferst. but I'm not really sure that helps you in this case.
