After giving the new way a try, I still like some aspects of the old fm better, whose in favor of
a) being able to comment on the same page of events (aka, not having to make a event and then also a discussion thread)
b) reducing the 6 categories down to 2 - 'bikes' and 'other' where bikes is 'mod' and other ain't
c) replacing the weather forecast where new events is at

You have some good ideas
but I think you are swimming upstream. Too bad...

a) being able to comment on the same page of events (aka, not having to make a event and then also a discussion thread)
Sometimes it's nice to say, "here's where I'll be" without having to deal with all the jibber jabber. Just teh facts.
b) reducing the 6 categories down to 2 - 'bikes' and 'other' where bikes is 'mod' and other ain't
Riding bikes has a lot of aspects to it. I'm more into "fix bikes" than other catagories, for example.
c) replacing the weather forecast where new events is at
maybe teh CK can make that an option.
power to the creator
okay, how about giving the creator of the thread the option of allowing comments or not, and the option of modding their own threads
Drupal won't do this yet and
Drupal won't do this yet and I don't have time. See my longer comment a few below. If someone wants to make this or some subset of this happen, I'm open to it.
I'm feeling you on the
I'm feeling you on the category issue. Can't say I'm fond of the separate event post and discussion thread either, it seems unintuitive for a great number of people.
a) this one is here to
a) this one is here to stay. when a thread goes to shit it needs to be removable from an event. Once I have time there will be a new form to create events that creates the discussion thread as well, but until FM$ is coming in for it to be worth my time to re-prioritize, I'll get to it when I get to it. If someone else wants to do this, please do! I'm using the stock drupal forums, stock drupal events, and if you use Drupal's CCK and Views tools, it will be able to drop right in.
b) as FM grows, this separation will be more important I think. I personally just use the what's new block and don't worry about categories. If you want to drill down you can, when I have time the whats new block will be more customizable. It's a hack, so if some wants to write a module that adds user preferences for what forums to show based on what forums exist, and then display it in a block. that would be awesome. This is probably straightforward using Views.
c) Hopefully Drupal will add support for user preference of ordering blocks. I've been wanting this and it's been a struggle to balance the order of what I want with what everyone else wants. The Ads need to be high up, And I think new things should be at the top so you don't have to scroll down to see whats new, but I'm open to ordering suggestions here.

you're a fair man
Roger, you're an accountant.
Roger, you're an accountant. How can you not like categorization?

we're using the new cover sheets on the TPB reports.
I don't think I was on that
I don't think I was on that e-mail list. When did we stop using the old covers?
When we got the
new mimeograph machine. Geez...

Anyway, me and him, we're from different ancient tribes. And now, we're both almost extinct. Sometimes you gotta stick with the ancient ways, the old school ways.
Meet the new [wai], same as the old [wai]
Sorry Dodger, you can never go home again.
The new format (aka multiple categorization)
has definitely slowed down the number of posts. This in turn has cut down on the number of unrelated postings (*being directly viewed) and allowed for more quality control (though we still have our policemen on active duty, thank god!).
I must say that the old format was more user friendly, however, the new format serves its purpose well.
Speaking as the all-time top
Speaking as the all-time top FM poster, (Although that status is likely to change shortly...) I would contend that the new format is not responsible for the decreased frequency of posts, certainly not mine in particular. Correlation does not equal causation, sir.
i disagree that it's slowed
i disagree that it's slowed down the number of posts. I will make graphs. eventually.
yea
i was just speaking from my own experience + the speculation that there are a lot more people on the board now, thus, post quantities are bound to go up. However, post frequencies for a number of us have fallen. I would imagine there are some outliers though (i'm looking at you, Dfunk).
