pig roast

*updated for 2008*

Once again its that time of year when we roast a pig!

If you've been before, you know the drill. If this is new for you, here's the low-down. We will provide one entire pig, roasted, and a large quantity of beer, cold. Please feel free to bring any items that you would enjoy eating with large quantities of pork. In the past, people have brought salads, beans, potato salad, brownies, tofu, cookies, guacamole, salsa, chips etc.

To help visualize the event, here's some pictures of prior years:

The donations worked out last year, so I'll request the same thing for this year: a modest $3 donation (and if the spirit moves you, more is also welcome).

The pig should be ready for eating around 7pm. We will be hanging out and drinking beer from about 1pm on. You are more than welcome to come early and drink with the few pig preparers.

And yes, vegetarians are still welcome!

Note the location change from last year!! This year its in midtown, on 8th St across from Grady High School.

I prefer the ones that go for the meat.

but

wouldn't the energy available by eating a meat-eater be less than the energy available by eating a vegetarian?

Depends

on who can run away faster®.

I think there is more energy

I think there is more energy (caloric) to be had from proteins than from starches.

Grain fed beef tastes better though... so read that as you may.

ahem

Believe it or not, I eat protein and not just starch. Peas, beans, corn, spinach, okra, asparagus, etc. etc. all have over 2 grams of protein per serving.

hmms.

Teh Black Hole's picture

Egg whites... 100% protein.

Egg whites... 100% protein. I'm also pretty sure baby back ribs are like 200% protein and gold.

%

% is relative. An egg (based on a 100 g egg) contains 12.5 grams of protein. A serving of lentils (based on a 100 g serving) contains 28 grams of protein.

Now then. Which as more?

quality, not quantity

the eggs will be a more complete protein than the lentils.

yes and no

Not if you pair the lentils with some corn.

Lentils and

Lentils and corn.......sounds ...*ack great *ack.

conjob's picture

yeah dude

really, i'd rather just go for the egg. i'd rather eat 100g of egg than 100g of lentils and corn.

The example works better

The example works better with beans and corn. Like black beans and corn tortillas.

I used to like eggs. Now I'm not so sure. Crap.

Jean Pierre's picture

you know what would go

you know what would go really good in a corn tortilla fulla black beans? Sour cream, homemade salsa, and scrambled eggs.

OMG, that sounds so good.

OMG, that sounds so good. I'm going to eat breakfast at West Egg tomorrow where they serve this exact item. Anybody westsiders down to eat breakfast at west egg monday morning? 8:30 ish?

food should be served around

food should be served around 7-8pm (we won't know exactly how big the pig is till the day before, so it's hard to estimate more precisely than that). me and my roommate will be chilling out from about 1pm onwards, you're welcome to drop by early, or drop by closer to feeding time. let me know if you're dropping by earlier -- if a bunch of people do it may affect how much beer to get....

man oh man, i'm looking forward to this.
