is there one? was this year too cold? rainy season?
o.o
[edit. taken over by ck:]
Sounds like September 8-9 is the way to go. Nice weather, Good for Johnny's, good for people in school, etc.
August 4-5 Still Summer! (people not back in school yet, so people out of town like gong and ck)
August 11-12 bike bike conference (still summer, gong+ck for sure not in ATL)
August 18-19 Weekend before GT/GSU classes start
August 25-26 Weekend before Emory classes start (but they start late in the week)
September 1-3 Labor Day/Dragon Con
September 8-9 weekend after LD, people may need catching up time? (Johnny's prefers this one to the weekend before labor day.)
September 15-16 IndyFan's wedding (ck likely out of town)
September 22-23 DLV Festival Of Speed
September 29-30
October 6-7
October 13-14 24 Hours of Conyers

early september.
I say september 1st and 2nd. last years was originally supposed to happen at the end of sept. but we pushed it back, and in november, its too damn cold. fucking hell.
also, the day before this is critical mass, so there might be some hilarious handicapping happening because of that.
this would be a good
this would be a good weekend. Other ones that would make sense for me are the 18-19 or 25-26 of August. Warm is good and will make handling a crowd outside even easier.
its too damn cold last year
its too damn cold
last year it was friggin cold. but that was a freak cold spell that happened to coincide with the race. 2 days earlier was warm, 2 days later was warm.
Austin is always right
Plus I like Sept bc it is way sooner than the months after it.
super agree
I'd go for first or second week of September. It'll still be warm, but hopefully not too hot and it will be the beginning of the semester so school shouldn't be an issue for anyone.
As soon as we set the date we should start marketing it. Everyone in Florida was asking when it was going down this year.
Late August/Early September...
is my favorite time of year in Atlanta. I highly endorse doing the race around this time as long as we can be prepared by then.
First step is picking a
First step is picking a date.
Second step is confirming that date with a host for the race.
Third step is marketing the date.
We screwed up and skipped step 2 last year and there was a bit of drama associated with that.
Let's put a call out for
Let's put a call out for everybody to research various calendars and events to make sure that we're not conflicting with anybody else. (Other races, sopo events, etc, etc, etc...)
nothing at sopo yet
for that time of year. it would be cool not to schedule over the bike bike conference, which is during the weekend of aug 12.
If you put it on DragonCon weekend I will have to kill you
Also, I think there are 2 weddings (non-biker) going down in Sept. I am going to one, gaidig is going to both. I will check dates.
so when is dragoncon
so when is dragoncon weekend?
8/31-9/3, Labor Day Weekend...
Which we've already mostly ruled out, yes?
Make that three; Linda
Make that three; Linda Softride and I will marry on the 15th.
really?
Congrats!
Are you going to bike away on a tandem??? :-D
Thank you. (Big grin.)Yes,
Thank you. (Big grin.)
Yes, I believe we will plot our escape on a tandem. We may have to flip a coin to see who's stoker, though.
!
So adorable! We will have to see pictures of course!
ditto. you will die a
ditto. you will die a million deaths from us nerdy women if this conflicts with dragoncon.
I'm sorry,
my eyes immediately gravitated to the part of the post where you mention nerdy women. Was there a threat in there somewhere?
If I plan a little race for dragoncon weekend
will I die from a million "little deaths" / Le Petit Mort from nerdy women?
as long as this race...
...involves staying as far away from dragoncon as possible, I'm in.
You wish...
You'll have better luck dying a million little deaths from nerdy women by actually attending dragoncon.
sept 1-2
that is labor day weekend. just as long as people know to not go out of town or something then i think its perfect. plus everybody will have monday to recover.
some possible minuses of
some possible minuses of this
-lots else going on in atlanta
-greatly increased police presence
-people do go outta town (I want to!)
sept 8-9
Sept 8-9 might be optimal.
Increased police presence = baaaad. As does superly increased traffic.
Nothing is listed on Bikeforums for that weekend yet.
this is why I rule.
even more reason to do this on this date. no work/school on monday.
yeah
i was posting a response to this but never mind.
sept 8-9 sounds good, and
sept 8-9 sounds good, and has a lot of sunlight hours:

Sept. 1 sucks b/c it's labor day weekend and cops will be out
100% of the London
100% of the London contingent supports an August date.
100% folks, if that ain't consensus, I don't know what is.
Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city...
But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright
Normals and Records for August
Let me just get this on the record
Let me just get this on the record, the Velodrome's final Festival of Speed is all day Saturday 9/22/2007, so we'd want to nix that weekend.
I dont know when school starts up in the fall, but the weekend before Labor Day might be game(y).
Also if the choice comes down to Sept 8 or 15, I'd strongly suggest the 15th, cuz the 8th weekend follows the holiday and alot of people will be trying to catch up with life from being outta town the previous weekend and dealing with a short work week plus they'd would want some time to prepare for the race. js.
my vote is for
September 8-9.
Recovery time from LD? You've got all week. If there is nothing booked for this weekend then take it! Good weather.
Why do you hate Alex so much?
Why do you hate Alex so much?
Why? If we go one weekend before labor day, instead of after, then some-of-us can brag about how well we did and how many badass prizes we won over labor day weekend. js.
Btw, congrats on Florida. I hope to see some of your loot at CM.
Not like two or three weeks
Not like two or three weeks makes *that* big of a difference, but August is going to be high hell hot and I'm not sure that's the awesomest month to do a 24 hour race. Nighttime would be great, but during the day we could have major heat issues. Plus it's harder to draw out-of-towners into to town if we're promising 90-95+ degree temperatures. Just saying.
All good points,
All good points, except:
>Not like two or three weeks makes *that* big of a difference
Actually it is a big difference in Europe. August is Holiday (vacation) time, September is not.
I luv the heat and I'll want as many advantages as possible. (cuz I'll need them)
I meant heat-wise. Sept.
I meant heat-wise. Sept. can be just as hot as August. I know that August is Alex's vacation time, and two or three weeks does make a big difference there, but I think it's more important to think of maybe a cooler (and therefore safer) time to ride, in addition to making it at a time when out of state people can come. I know Philly and some other places have alleycats all through August, plus with school starting up right around the last two weekends of August it could get sketchy as far as people not being able to show up or moving around on campuses and that sort of thing.
isn't auagust too early
for college people who haven't come back into town yet? I'll be here, and I'm pretty OK with anything but Labor Day Weekend (b/c DragonCon and cops) but I remember seeing a lot of GT ppl at the last FM 24HR that might not be back in August, right?
Whatever
You hate me, I have always known it.
Maybe she can't handle
being so close to a sweaty Alex. vbg
dragoncon....
makes me want to kill myself.
I just want my doughnuts!
I just want my doughnuts!
Go with your gut feelings
it's best for everyone if you're happy
especially if it's your gut
especially if it's your gut that is happy.

I'm thinkin I'm going to
I'm thinkin I'm going to make an executive decision here based on everyones input so we can move on to the next thing.
September 8-9 is the date for FM.24.07. any objections, state them now!
I say
go for it!
Let me know when I can start spreading the word to other folk that this (or some other one) is the exact date.

:(
Have fun at the 24 hour race & plan another race sometime I can go.
why didn't you mention this
why didn't you mention this date didn't work for you all the time we were talking about it?
How about because you
How about because you discussed it for one week and I did not go on FM at all during that time? For the record, Sharonopolis mentioned that I had some conflicts, so you shouldn't be too surprised.
ETA: In case it sounds like I want everyone to change just for me, I don't. Really, if that's the best time, no problem. I just want to participate in some other race that I can make it to.
Yow!
There are 2 other seemingly open dates on your list there: Sept 29th and Oct 6. I pull for Oct 6 if there's still a chance at changing this. I know we're not going to have a date that accomodates everyone, but a downthread executive decision is maybe not the best way to go here?
Has Johnny's already been booked?
BTW, the reason I didn't weigh in was because I was out of town for a funeral.
