New forum categories and events

So the forums have changed, but it's still mostly the same. Check out the new categories at /forum. These aren't super set in stone, but let me know if you have a big problem with the setup. The old "General Discussion" has been moved to "Unshaved." There you can talk about whatever, but most stuff will likely fit into one of the other categories. When things get out of hand, they'll be moved by someone to the off topic forum where they will still be open to comments but will not show up on the front page or in the New Stuff block or RSS feeds or any of that. None of these things function yet so please avoid posting in there just yet how you don't think WWII actually happened, but eventually!

edit: renamed "the shitter" to something else temporarily and I'm callin it "the off topic thread" here fornow.

A big change however: New events can no longer have comments! This is to prevent discussion from being all over the place. Events now have a discussion url field where you can type in the name of the discussion topic and it will link to it (discussion topics also have an event url field for names of events if you want to stick it in there). The idea with this is that there are lots of discussions about most events, and this allows the event "owner" to pick which one they want associated with what shows up on the calendar and in the calendars of people that subscribe to the fm calendar. This way, if a thread about an event digresses to talking about how much kittens love cupcakes (f*in kittens always takin my cupcakes!!zomggrrr) a new one can be created about how people are getting there and that thread can be linked to the event. It's not a perfect solution, but I think it's a step in the right direction.

Dude where's my thread?

FWIW, I dont mind the so

FWIW, I dont mind the so called "shitter" treads showing up in my "What's New" box. Since we have a checkbox to determine the visibility of our identity, could we also have a checkbox that allows "shitter" threads to be shown inside the "Whats New" box?

I fully understand that some people have concerns about threads, but I just ignore nuisances a/o stuff I dont care about. tia.

chris:

Now that events have separate discussion threads, are we going to eventually take event posts off the front page? The reason I ask is that when you create an event and then create a discussion you end up with two posts on the front page back-to-back and I feel bad 'cause I'm taking up so much room on the front page! Thanks!
