Anybody up for a pretty fast ride? Austin did a really killer one of these a few months ago, I think he had the magic formula. I'm thinking a pretty decent distance, somewhere between 15 and 20 miles. We'll keep a pretty quick pace the whole time, and try to incorporate a sprint section or two (we'll regroup after the sprint and resume the ride). If a couple of people are interested, I'll try to come up with a route we can use, or if anyone else has any ideas, post 'em here.
EDIT: Here's the route I'm thinking about using

that really hit the spot. help me cook up a route for next week!
... or make CM's one... ;)
... or make CM's one... ;) then we could name you Maptester and Jenny would be your queen... or somat
A route for CM would be most welcome
Your skills are there-Do It.
Dammit.
Why am I always broken?
damn school.
in a few weeks i'll resume having fun. this sounds like a great idea!
:-(
I am interested, but I am currently bikeless. Anybody got a nice, moderately priced road wheelset they wanna sell? Anybody interested in building me one? I pay in pizza, beer, music lessons and, of course, the cold hard stuff. (rear dropout spacing is probably about 126mm)
David, pop into as many bike
David, pop into as many bike shops as you can and ask them. They all have abandoned repair bikes that just take up space and would love to part them out.
You might even find gold, as in a wheelset with old campy high flange road hubs, for like $100. Hint who potato chiped a rear wheel last CM?
True
But I'd enjoy having some new bike stuff for a change. Sealed barings, double-walled hooked 700c rims, all that good stuff. Much as I like working on bikes, I don't have the patience to regularly repack hubs and worry about rim failure. I'm willing to shell out for bullet-proofness at this point.
Then go back and find Phil's
Then go back and find Phil's comments about finding a wheelset, he found some very reasonable sources online. But 126mm is old-skool nowadays.
I know
I may hav to call up what's-her-name you all keep talking about and see what she charges to spread my dropouts. Yay steel.
Anr re: Phil's comments on wheelset finding- Linky?
Do I even need to say what I
Do I even need to say what I thought?
Don't think so...
I dunno
When was the last time you had your dropouts spread?
I tried
to spread some girls dropout tonight. but it did not work out as well as I had imagined. good luck.
Some dropouts are difficult to spread cold
I think the proper application of heat, along with the correct leverage might help. vbg.
The trick
to successful bike repair, as far as I can tell, is to have the right tool for the job and to ALWAYS use lubricant.
I like where this is going... no, not really.
Last time I had to spread drop outs... I had to use a 2x4 and piece of string.
this might be where I went wrong
I tried useing a bottle of zinfindel.
wait... are we talking about the same thing?
...
you find the most inventive ways of doing just about everything, don't you?
Now I am going to hell.
You have to think outside the box.
Naw, the string thing is on the internets
With pictures!
You could spread your dropouts yourself (cold set the frame)
Da man: http://sheldonbrown.com/frame-spacing.html
Just take your time and measure.
I know I could
I read about it on vintagetrek.com. But I still consider myself a novice bike-fixer and it's not the sort of thing I can afford to screw up. So I figured I'd have a pro bend my frame for me and have a pro build me up some super-durable 700c wheels. I think I could handle adapting my brakes by myself though. And I'll change out my own bottom bracket sometime in the next few months. /maintanance schedule
shops can do it
it's easy. pretty cheap I'd guess

here's the saved route from before ( http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=543516 ).
i'm up for whatever. we should do your route if you have something in mind. didn't you drag us over some hills around GrantPark a while back?
yeah, I was thinking of
yeah, I was thinking of doing some unholy union of dragging us through Grant Park and your route from last time. I'll sketch it out on gmap and post a link here when it's nearing completion.
potential route
alright, here it is - I think it looks pretty solid.
