FM Track Licensing Weekend Event... For Real.

deadcowboymike's picture

Details:
I am making this an event so it shows up on the calendar. Ck, if you know how to merge the two, feel free to do so.
OKAY WE ARE ON GUYS. BLOCK IN THE 10TH/11TH, LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE SHOWING UP, AND THEN SHOW UP WITH 50$ IN HAND (CASH OR CHEQUE), YOUR PEDALS AND YOUR HELMET AND A WILLINGNESS TO ROCK THE TRACK. We'll fill out paperwork on the 10th. If anyone wants to arrange a group-ride there to arrive at 1pm, let me know.
From Brian, himself.
The 10/11 is probably workable.
We have some things going on at the track the morning of the 10th and the afternoon of the 11th. However, it should be possible to work around these.
That said, here’s a plan:
Saturday: start time would be 1pm and we’ll go for around 3.5 hrs. Certainly no longer than 4.
Sunday: start time would be 10 am and ride for approx. 3 hours.
Cost is $50.00. That will include the use of a bike and also cover the open training fee for the year. Helmets are mandatory (we have some that we can loan out if needed). Re. pedals....cleats and some kind of clipless or strap system is going to be much more efficient and secure, but we have had folks go through the classes with platform pedals and tennis shoes.
Folks can bring their own track bikes if they have them. However, we will need to make sure the bikes are safe first.
In case of rain, we will need to reschedule.
Let me know if you have any questions.

share with us the specs. I'm still saving money to put one together. Hmmm... now might be a good time to get a credit card.

You picked up the Fuji Track

You picked up the Fuji Track Pro I assume.

griggey's picture

YOU BITCH!

if you bought that Fuji Tack Pro 56cm from Skate Escape then we're fighting. I've had my eye on it for atleast a month but havn't had the money.

i did pick up the track pro

i did pick up the track pro when i was there yes, but i certainly didn't take it home with me. whatever that means.

The Chechoslavakian hotness:
http://item.express.ebay.com/DURATEC-MAGNETIC-T8-TRACK-FRAMESET-56cm_W0Q...

The reason I like Duratec frames so much:

1. The price is right.
2. They are handmade.
3. Ground TIG welds.
4. CNC'd drop outs.
5. Custom geometry if you contact them.
6. Custom colors if you contact them.
7. Small company so you get personal service.

nice find

couldn't find much about tsunami frames but thats a nice price for a frame. does anyone know much?

Teh Black Hole's picture

The Tsunami frames are

The Tsunami frames are generic Kenesis made Al frames... search bikeforums.net for more info. There are also some nice Leader Track frames that have shown up on eBay. They require forks though.

Jeff's picture

I'll step up to that remark

No, don't get a credit card. Either buy parts as you can afford them (could go cheap/used and upgrade as you are able) or a low-end bike and upgrade components. Credit can suck you dry.

Yeah, save and buy cheap.

Yeah, save and buy cheap. Ebay, Craigslist, and Chucks Bikes are your friend.

The Miche full groupo on Chucks Bikes is especially nice.

You guys ROCK

thank you guys for letting me hang out Sunday. I wasn't really sure what Brian would have me do, so I was just sorta hanging around doing a couple efforts here and there. But I was so happy to see all you guys having so much FUN!

Brian said everyone looked really great on Sunday. Some already available opportunites for training,

Monday night advanced training: This may be full, but it's awesome. We do motorpacing and time trialing, really fun stuff! You can also steal workout ideas by going to the website and clicking the "Advanced Training" link.

Saturday/Sunday mornings: This is just when people typically show to train. Unorganized but usually there's someone nice enough to let you work into their program. This is also when the "big boys and girls' are out motorpacing, so it can be a little scary if you're not used to have a motorcycle come around you at 40 mph.

Also, if you guys are going to train on Sunday evenings and you need some ideas on how to train. I would love to come and join you. We can jumps, kilos, pacelines, come-arounds, etc... It would be super-fun!

speedfreak's picture

I plan on being there sunday night

and would love to have someone give me ideas on training. and about the motorpacing, I actually felt a little out of place on the track without motor-vehicles in front of, next to, and behind me.

melissa's picture

this sunday no good...

i probably won't make it sunday night, since the women's clinic will be going both sat. and sun. but keep me posted if it happens next weekend.

griggey's picture

he will

Brett needs all the help he can get so he can try and get strong so one day he'll beat me.

:-)

griggey's picture

i know i speak for everyone when i say

Any help you're willing to offer will be GREATLY appreciated.

As for me personally, I don't get off work until 7 on Sundays (be at track at 8). I can do saturday mornings, but what other days could I go and be able to borrow a bike? I would be overjoyed if there were two days a week I could make it down there, have access to a bike, and train a few hours. It'll be a few months before I have my own track bike together.

speedfreak's picture

just me

or did anyone else find it concerning that none of the track rules said anything about alcohol. i just want to say that I will not be riding the track after drinking and will not be cool with anyone else riding on the track if they have been drinking. This probably goes without saying but knowing how past FM events have gone I just feel the need to say this just in case anyone gets any ideas.

IndyFan's picture

A sign on the gate states no

A sign on the gate states no alcohol allowed on premises.

Thanks, Brian, Melissa, and everyone for the great intro to track racing.

Teh Black Hole's picture

Yeah, no booze, for the love

Yeah, no booze, for the love of science, make sure you are at the top of your game mentally before you get out there.

ckdake's picture

the adrenaline of taking the

the adrenaline of taking the lead and going crazy fast and not knowing if you're going to die in the turn or not as you pedal as fast as you possibly can.... sure beats drinking.

Dfunk's picture

Yeah, no drinking blue ribbons until you're all done earning blue ribbons.

Teh Black Hole's picture

Word to the wise...

when you amp it up above 300 watts, make sure your wheel can handle the juice.

guerciotti's picture

Yeah, what happened to you?

Yeah, what happened to you? A flat, pop a spoke?

My rear tire was low and I could feel the squishyness, but I muttled thru.

Big Props to Mike and Brian Sullivan, a great event and everybody is now certified to ride the track.

After the girls finish their condensed class (ya'll luv it, just ask your SO) next weekend, we're thinking that the FM group will start riding a regular training session on Sunday evenings starting at 5pm (cuz most of us dont really wake up until after noon, iykwim) for say 2(+?) hours, which means we'll be done before sundown.

Let us know if this works for you or perhaps a better time.

griggey's picture

this'll prob need its own thread

but as for me, sundays work for now but if I work on sundays I wouldn't be over at the track until 8 or so. If this turns out to be the case I'll find another day (hopefull two) I can train there and post it.

Teh Black Hole's picture

When I dropped the hammer

When I dropped the hammer the wheel wasn't up to snuff, I just relaced it the night before last and finished truing it last night. I think the rim is toast (don't want this happening again, I potato chipped it after BH due to drunkeness and figured I could save the wheel, looks like I'm in the market for a set of Mavic Ellipses).

Also, I agree, mad props to Brian for being our professor and Mike for organizing this. As for the training on Sundays... +1! Because I have that night off.

Dfunk's picture

Day one report:

Nobody hurt, much learned and a good time had by all. And then tots! Good day. Day two should be even more intense.

Will someone please bring sunscreen?

We're still on for Woodruff

We're still on for Woodruff at 11:30. We don't technically need to go so early anymore, since Brian had allotted 1 to 2 for set-up time, but it's too late to change it now. We'll go and fuck around or something.

Weather says rain, but only 40%. That's less than a flip of a coin! I haven't gotten an email from Brian calling it off, so until I do, I'm still going.

Don't forget: pedals, helmet, 50$ (cash or check).

Dfunk's picture

It's raining here in Decatur

Is it canceled then?

IndyFan's picture

The weather lady says

The weather lady says scattered showers...improving during the afternoon. I say go.

Dfunk's picture

Yea but

doesn't the track get wet in the rain? Doesn't it have to be dry for it to be safe to ride?

melissa's picture

.

i'll be heading up there about 12 pm to warm-up. If it's cancelled, I could call and let you guys know. do sort of a phone tree kinda thing.

Okay, so I need someone to

Okay, so I need someone to organize a group ride to this. I don't know how to get to the Velodrome or how long it takes, so if someone who has been there before just wants to approximate a start time and start point and have a route, I would greatly appreciate it.

guerciotti's picture

Ok bookmark this

Ok bookmark this route:
http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=752946

I dont know my schedule for Saturday yet, so I dont how I'll get there. But the route is dead simple, with the only complication being that Atlanta has this bad habit of giving one road lots of new names every mile or so, just for the helluva it.

Starting from Woodruff (since everybody can get there), just go due south on Ptree, which will call itself Whitehall Street, then Murphy Ave. That stretch will last about 3.5 miles. It parallels RR tracks and a much busier street on the other side of the tracks called Lee Street.

When you get to Dill Ave. (which is where the Bakery is located), you take a quick right, under the RR tracks and Marta line and then a left to get on Lee Street, which you'll take straight into East Point proper. Btw, Lee Street becomes Main Street and then Church Street, but its the same freakin road. whatever. From there you just zigzag thru Ware, Cheney, Neely and onto Lexington. The Velodrome is in the park.
