Dfunk's Orchestra Students Perform @ Festival

Details:
Title pretty much says it all. My 8th graders (from Chamblee MS) will be performing three awesome (not to mention pretty difficult) pieces at the upcoming district IV orchestra festival. They've already come a long way and it's only going to sound better between now and festival time. I won't be conducting them, (at least I don't think so...) but I'll be there to help them get situated and, of course, to cheer them on as they earn "superior" marks from all the judges and put the competition to shame. Come on out, support these awesome kids, hear some pretty awesome classical music, (It must be awesome if a jaz head like me acknowledges it!) and see the results of how I spend my every weekday morning. Unlike most of my gigs, this is relatively close to our usual haunts. (Especially for you emeroids, who I hope will show up in force...) And it's early enough that we can go do bikes and beers afterward if anybody's interested.

I wasnt able to make your performance, or rather that of your kids, but do tell us how things went. I suspect well, but its better to hear it from you.

Dfunk's picture

Yeah, I'm pretty happy :-)

No idea what the scores are yet. Should find out in a day or two. But they sounded pretty darn good, specially considering how hard the music they were playing was. My middle school orchestra couldn't have pulled off a Vivaldi concerto grosso. I think they've pretty much earned their disney trip.

But

then you can't say you're "never goin' back."

Jeff's picture

Oh, I've been back.

It wasn't so bad, back in the day before teaching to tests and a standardized curriculum. Floated through some of the best years on clouds of smoke there.

ha

that's rad.
i remember going to those things in middle school. i remember feeling nervous that they'd ask me to play something like an F#m scale and i'd totally fuck up and just get a "good" or "excellent" instead of "superior."
of course, i always got "superior" because i AM superior.

is it really at 7pm though? cause i have class then. if it's not at 7, though, then i'll definitely show up.

Dfunk's picture

Sadly yes

Our time slot for judging is at 7. Oh well.
