So I was cleaning my dirty helmet this morning (ha ha) and noticed the little sticker on it that said "June 2003." 3.5 years old is not a good age for a conventional helmet.
So, what are your recommendations on new ones?
You look like you post.

Giro Atmos or the Monza... but alas, they are very expensive, but oh so stylish.
Edit - In all seriousness... the one your man partner has is nice, I admire it from afar.
You mean this?

Reasonably priced too. Can be had online for about $30 + shipping. Not bad considering they're supposed to be good for multiple impacts.

Background info
http://www.bhsi.org/replace.htm
Most manufacturers now recommend that helmets be replaced after five years, but some of that may be just marketing.
Occasionally somebody spreads rumors that sweat and ultraviolet (UV) exposure will cause your helmet to degrade. Sweat will not do that. The standards do not permit manufacturers to make a helmet that degrades from sweat, and the EPS, EPP or EPU foam is remarkably unaffected by salt water. Your helmet will get a terminal case of grunge before it dies of sweat. UV can affect the strength of the shell material, though. Since helmets spend a lot of time in the sun, manufacturers usually put UV inhibitors in the plastic for their shells that control UV degradation.
but i like my marketing
but i like my cycling-related urban myths. tell me the one about the knee over pedal spindle again, please.

They've got sales on last year's helmets. The Bell Metropolis was $30 (normally $70)

the Metropolis is the higher end version of the Citi that I got. They also had some other helmets on sale -- skate/bmx style for $15 (with cpsc sticker).
What about this one?

I've always liked catlikes, but they're not sold in the U.S. (or they weren't, maybe they are now?) because of the company's fear of the litigiousness of americans.
Why are you two so combative?

Ahh, thats gotta be worth something. You damn sure wont find it in a helmet from some faceless corporate robber-baron soul-crushing enterprise.
i'm combative by nature, but
i'm combative by nature, but that wasn't one of the times. i was simply adding my opinion, in as neutral a way as i could.
protec saved my brain once
and they'll probably save it again. protec all teh way. it gets a little sweaty at times, though (especially in teh summer).
even though your helmet is "old" i think it should still be okay, unless you've had a few falls here and there. but if you want to use this as an excuse to buy a new helmet, go for it!
CA has a helmet that's pretty good for multi-impacts. i recall it's rather pricey though.
my helmet (in my profile pic) set me back around $50 @ SE.
[edit] furthermore, you should have seen the look of amazement and maybe pissed-off-ness this one kid gave me last semester when he was wearing his blue helmet and talking to his friends, and i walked by with my blue helmet straped to my bag.[/edit]
[edit2]LOL.[/edit2]
mine was $50

I thought all of the protecs were multiple impact helmets.
not all protecs are CPSC
not all protecs are CPSC certified. many of the less expensive ones do not have the dense foam and are merely plastic shells with padding. something to think about.

Maybe it was $40. I'm pretty certain it was well under $50. I canc Check.
My thoughts on helmets
Try them on for fit then purchase locally. You’ll feel better when you ask your LBS to provide replacement suspension system parts, the soft underbelly of helmets.
Vents keep you cool. If you will ride on trails look for dished vents that won’t snag. The Giro Xen is a good example of this style.
Vent layout affects attachment of headlights. The Xen will allow you to center and zip-tie a handlebar light very nicely. Giro’s Atmos will not.
A helmet may take more licks off your head than on. Get in the habit of looping it around the bars or seat; tossing it around will damage it.
Weight factor: I prefer the Xen for commuting and trail riding and the lighter Atmos for all-day in the saddle events.
Color factor: White reflects heat better than darker colors and is more visible.
Freebie White Helmet
I have an extra free helmet, its white, never been in an acident (as far as I know, plus I've never worn it), the only caveats are that it doesn't have a massive number of vents and the mfg sticker inside it says: 2-94, so next month it will finally become a teenager.
If anybody wants it, just say so. FOB CM.
