Details:
Last year, Alex and I did this brevet, and it is truly hard to describe the intense pain, mental anguish, and rewarding sense of accomplishment. I will definitely be doing the 200 km again, and I've heard Alex mention a long-term goal of completing the whole series (WOW!) I'm posting this event early, so that those of us interested can get together and begin training. Although 13.5 hours seems like plenty of time, with almost 10,000 ft of climbing, training will save a lot of soreness race day.

I was training today on the
I was training today on the SCT for about 54 miles. Currently I'm averaging about 15 miles/day (just 105/week), keep in mind I dont commute.
Melissa, what kinda milage and training intensity are you doing? Hopefully you're fully recovered.
training
right now, i'm in the 'basic strenth phase' which involves building a solid endurance base to work from. weight lifting 4 times a week, then 77-100 miles on sat (silver comet) sometimes fixed, sometimes not, at an easy pace. sunday, just started 50 miles at a faster pace with hill sprints, etc... i think for this type of event it's more about training your body to sit on a bike for that long (9.5 hours for me last year.) This is the longest event I'll do, so I probably won't actually ride 130 miles for training. I think a few centuries is good enough. if you ever want to do ride the silver comet together, i'm out there every sat. (even rain, unless it's torential downpour) at 9:30/10 from Nickajack Elementary School.
i would love to join in on
i would love to join in on some silver comet training rides, but i don't have a car.
is there a way to get out there without a car?
Your friendly neighborhood
Your friendly neighborhood bass player owns a minivan and a trunk rack and is looking for more excuses to ride the silver comet. However, Saturday am rides could put a serious dent in my Friday pm alcohol tolerance and dance party training.
well well well
anytime you wanna hit up the silver comet, you know how to find me.
optional alcohol tolerance training post-ride.
this sat
weather looks pretty good, 57 high, 10% chance of rain. if dfunk drives and you guys wanna meet up there, just let me know....like i said, we have to get there early because billy and i both work on sat. nights.
I dunno if I'm up to it this
I dunno if I'm up to it this weekend. I'm getting sick. :-(
man
everybody is getting sick!
what gives?
too much kissin, not enough
too much kissin, not enough ridin
well then
that explains why I am not sick.
no the chemicals explain why
no the chemicals explain why you aren't sick. there aren't enough viable healthy places left for baddies to attack.
well
i got sick a few weeks ago and i wasn't kissin' nobody...
my point exactly.
my point exactly.
Ride there and back, skip
Ride there and back, skip the Comet, and you'll have about 40-miles of riding in.
I wouldn't train for a gaps ride on the Silver Comet. There's better training from anywhere to downtown.
good point
hence, why also include sunday's airport ride for hills. the brevet is not the only race i'm in training for, i'm truly training to be a pursuiter. at the same time, i really enjoy this event. eh, i don't care what you fools do, but if you wanna train long distances these are two rides that are good for that in their own ways....
pursuit. now that's an
pursuit. now that's an interesting race. it's like someone took a time trial and made it into a real race. a million times better. i'd be down for some pursuit training at the track sometime if you want.
and as soon as i get my road bike going, i'm gonna need to start riding it.
pursuit training at the track...
that'd be great! steve hogan offered a one-time pursuit class last year, he had a lot to say about the best way to train...actually i'm being sarcastic. pursuit training--ride some distance (kilo, 2 k, etc.) repeatedly with lap times being consistent. sounds like a blast, right? also, there'll be a pursuit challenge this year (June 1st.) Unfortunately, I can't go, Billy and I will be at my parents' tandem rally. But I do want to try pursuit at regionals. You got aerobars?
i have a basebar but still
i have a basebar but still need to get the clipon aero bits.
i'm borrowing some, but i
i'm borrowing some, but i still haven't ridden on them yet...
it's strange.
it's strange.
acctually
i think its only 5 or 6 miles (from me).
but for connie it'd probably be a little over 10 miles.
[I'm too lazy to look it up on google maps]
My mileage is based on a
My mileage is based on a ride from Decatur to access the Comet near the covered bridge in Smyrna. You go out towards Bolton past King Plow.
yeah
according to good ol' google maps, smyrna is 19.5 miles from my apartment.
hmmm...
that i'm not sure about. i would offer you a ride, but i drive a 2-seater pick-up and billy's always in the passenger seat. maybe if we get enough interested peeps?!
I'm in awe of you
You're gonna race for Emory, right? Meeting tonight at 7! Be there or be square! Actually, I'm not even going to be there because I'm sick...but that's beside the point.
boo
i was excited to actually meet you face-to-face.
don't be in awe, come with me. (trust me, i do a lot of moaning and belly-aching along way.) plus, there are people all over atlanta that ride a whole lot harder, but i'm trying to keep it fun before it's all too serious.

Tour de Pike Century will be held on March 17th. It's one great training ride in rolling, scenic peach country south of the airport. Not much climbing, but fast, well supported and fun. Though the pollen fall can kill.
darn
women's track clinic that weekend.
Hmm, interesting, we might
Hmm, interesting, we might try to make this ride.
In case anybody is interested, we're gonna redo the Wilson 100 on March 3, all the markings are still on the roads for 30, 50, 60, 100, and 128 loops.
This event would be a nice warmup.
Cool. I helped stripe that
Cool. I helped stripe that route last August.
No no
be in awe. Melissa is totally fucking badass.
ah yes
thanks for the nice comment. you are going to be doing this with me again, right?
In my heart, yes
In practice, it depends... but that is not a board thing. I'll email you.
Gulp
10,000'? As in, cruising altitude for a jet liner? Umm, wow. Well, I think I'm at least interested in the training rides. We'll see if I'm up for the whole thing. I'm willing to try.
10k over 130 miles really
10k over 130 miles really isnt all that bad. you could run "northside's revenge" (bicycle link ride) three times and come up with about 75 miles and 9000ft of climbing. decent training, especially if you stop and jack a few of the hills multiple times.
I had never bonked
until I did this. My body shut down on the lest leg. It was awesome!
