24HR Urban Relay - Route Proposal from Charlie

Please see the 24HR Checkpoint Charlie thread to see how we got here.

http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/?r=462787

This is the 'suggested' route for safety and legal reasons. Get your hole punches following your favorite route - or just stop by Donnie's.

Route:
Johnny's - 676 Highland Ave
West on Highland Ave
Left on Randolph
Right on Edgewood
Merge into Marietta
Right on Spring
Merge into West Peachtree
Right on Peachtree
Left on 10th
Left on Monroe
Right on Kanuga
Left on Virginia
Right on Highland
Left on Freedom Pkwy
Right on Moreland
Right on Euclid
Right on Austin
Right on Elizabeth
Left on Highland

Checkpoints:
Across street from Thumbs Up Diner (573 Edgewood Ave)
Corner of Marietta St and Spring St
Corner of West Peachtree St and Peachtree St
Corner of 10th St and Piedmont Ave
Corner of Virginia Ave and Highland Ave
Corner of Moreland Ave and Euclid Ave

Everyone had a great time and some folks were suprised by how fun W Peachtree was - but with this route and these checkpoints you can easily go east 1 block at Ellis, Harris or Pine and still get the fun white lights on Peachtree (i'll probably switch these up myself some laps). Some folks weren't comfortable 'suggesting' Peachtree or CBH or Candler Park neighborhood at night for safety reasons.

We're looking for some +1s (or a good reason why not)

+1

and i'll be skipping over to Peachtree by Harris some times for some variety and a few white lights.

+1

For hard work and follow through.

I'll ride the route later today. Too bad folks aren't comfortable in CBH because its very nice at night, alittle bit of action but not enough to be an obstacle.

Also there's a new mexican place (food!) over there we should check out.

i will ride on peachtree

if my team members don't mind. bummer

+1, Very Fun Ride

Everyone I talked to last night on the ride enjoyed it and had fun. I was skeptical of W.Peachtree until I did it and it's a blast, like riding in a jet stream or on a dragstrip, it's the dirty side of the city we like, and a nice change-up from last year. So I encourage everyone to at least try it once, and you can always use peachtree during the race b/c it's your choice, just be positive, please.

Let's do it!

The Wednesday night San Fran Coffee ride all seemed to be in agreement that this course was AWESOME. Very fast and fun.

As I said Monday night, I like W P'tree. And Pershing Point is harder to miss than 17th. *wink*

Should we have another checkpoint on P'tree to keep people on P'tree not Juniper? Or is that an acceptable alternate?

I would like the turn through Little 5 to be longer and more important since it means that we can't gain momentum for the hill up to Johnny's by going down Highland. It just feels too short & pointless. I don't understand why people are worried about Candler Park. It may be dark, but it's a good neighborhood, and cyclists will be coming along behind you. Did people find the area to be a safety problem last year?

I like this route, should be fast, fun and have enough options to keep people interested.

I like W. Peachtree. During winter it can have some pretty challenging wind, which is an intersting factor to add. It is also less flat that P'tree, and quite honestly, the pavement on P'tree sucks.

+1 on the checkpoints

6 checkpoints -->very nice

If anyone has questions about checkpoint #4 - 10th and piedmont, we decided that instead of 10th and peachtree b/c it's less obvious for people/police to mess with, it's not on the corner of a federal bank, and there's a stoplight there anyway. cool?

Alex's picture

not being in the corner of the Fed

+1000, especially for those non-americans that do not want to be anywhere near anything that can vaguely be associated with terrorism.

checkpoint at Fed

Yeah, a cyclist or two would probably be disappeared to Guantánamo. Glad to hear it's moved.

route looks nice

good call on the marietta and spring/w peachtree ways. those should be a blast.

i do not support this dangerous new trend of +1'ing everything though.

i

like the route, good decision on piedmont stop, the federal police get itchy about lots of stuff, i'm sure it's pretty obvious to people to put all hole punch check point dealies on the inside/right side of traffic unless people just want to make people do a cross traffic manouver for urban reality type scenario, specifically at virginia/highland make sure that thing is on the right side of the light bypass, unless you're just tryin to get nuts, and in my opinion this arangement of checkpoints is going to keep me at least ninety five percent on suggested route for speed reasons, so i can't see it getting much better, there are very few time saving cut throughs besides the highland to whatever to seminole little five culdesac cut through because honestly thats way faster and i'm sure that lots of people are going to do it that way unless you put the checkpoint up north of that starbucks or something and even then i'd take ponce instead of freedom parkway for speed which if you want to keep people on freedom parkway god damn it the only way to really do it would be to have the checkpoint on the right side of freedom parkway three fourths down the road between highland and moreland that way taking ponce wouldn't make sense but i'd still haul ass the other way on freedom down to highland and take highland to finish point, or you could put the check point at the end of freedom parkway where it hits moreland and just assume that people would turn back around and do a hairpin type monaco turnaround which could be fun, but yeah thats the stop that i find most likely to see time saving/stretching of the rules/route

someone want to make a

someone want to make a flyerish version of this map? Last year we had a huuuge poster on the wall of E97 outside, and we'll need it on spoke cards and i've gotten some emails to 24@fm asking about it.

huuuge wall poster....

not sure about the flyer or spokecard version, but i was planning on sneaking a huuuge print off of the plotter at work. should be ~4'/4'. this could be used onsite on the wall of johnny's.

ckdake's picture

awesome. just whatever needs

awesome. just whatever needs to be printed should have checkpoints on it as well as the FM cog and Faster Mustache and Johnny's. I'm pretty sure the panda was scoping exact locations for checkpoints.

huuuuge wall poster....???

monday may be my last chance to sneak a plot. the plotter is in the alpharetta office and i really try to avoid that place... if you can send me the file the way you want it, i'll print it.

ckdake's picture

Yeah, someone should get on

Yeah, someone should get on making up the offical route image..

If necessary, can we can

If necessary, can we can settle for a 3' B&W plot?

(I can do that).

checkpoints should definitely be on it. Donald scoped out exact poles to attach the punches to. see this image from last year. any idea who made that one?

Huge poster print of this???

Huge poster print of this???

so i plotted something...

we now have a large print (~3.5' x 3.5') of this which i just now threw together. it is not fancy but it is large enough to be seen from across the check-in table and be a little pixelated on the curvy roads and make you feel a little crosseyed when you get too close to it. unfortunately i have to come back up to this forsaken place a couple more times this week.... so if you hate this map and have a better one to put through the plotter then send it on over.
