Thanks everyone for coming to the meeting last night. Here is a quick summary of what was discussed.
We want to move forward with the general concept depicted here. DO NOT PRINT THIS - it is a concept and it is being refined per suggestions at the meeting. Read below for the full story.
This is the "evil" poster. We will also develop a "good" poster featuring a rider in the city, but this time it will be a female on a cruiser and it will be white, maybe blue linework, with the same title. The idea is the two diferent posters represent the contrasting emotions of a 24 hour race, and also can attract widely diferent potential racers. We need to morph these two poster graphics into the following manifestations:
Large print poster
hand-out sized flyer
Spoke cards
Graphiti Stencil
Punch or Stamp cards for the lap tracking system
We can use help from other designers out there but please coordinate with me so there is no overlap and time wasted.
Our plan is to roll out stencils with very vague / ominous imagery that will build excitement this week, and pass out complete flyers starting at Critical Mass next Friday. At that time we will also begin deploying nation-wide advertising / flyering with Neal coordinating the west coast and Chicago, Dawn coordinating NYC, Me coordinating Tallahassee, Roger coordinating Montreal, Christopher coordinating cobb county, and Nicki on GSU. If you are going anywhere, please take a ton of flyers!!!

Everyone check out the website. http://24.fastermustache.org

additions
we need to add the word 'Team' somewhere to denote this is a team relay, then we also need to decide how large teams can be, 5 or 6, and yes, there's a solo category for bad mofo's
as soon as team sizes etc is
as soon as team sizes etc is figuring out, work can begin on the registration stuff as well as prize distribution so team sizes etc should be a priority
uh
as opposed to a solo relay?
you're right
so in the fine print we can say "teams of up to X"
question
can only one person from a team be riding the course at any time?
are we doing separate team categories this year?
last year,(and i think we
last year,(and i think we should keep this up) multiple riders can ride at the same time as long as they stay together. I think it will be hard to enforce either way.
if you use some kind of
if you use some kind of punch card, and only issue one per team that should not really be an issue. the card would still have to make it around the course.
Just remember that you don't
Just remember that you don't earn extra laps for having multiple team members on the course simultaneously.
yeah. it doesn't really make
yeah. it doesn't really make any sense to send a team out..
safety
Last year lots of "newbies" went out with teammates for safety reasons (Victor). I even went out with a teammate who is a Cat 2 road racer only because he wanted to learn the route and get comfortable. So it makes sense to do group laps, even if it doesn't earn you extra laps.
plus group laps are fun and
plus group laps are fun and that's more important than winning..... right?
yup
justin was nice enough to do a lap with me, although we were on different teams. it was pretty much the first time i was on a bike in YEARS.
so i can vouche for the safety in numbers reason.
so it's his fault we're all
so it's his fault we're all stuck with you? j/k l0lz
omg rofl
omg rofl
and what about team categories?
solo judged the same as 6 person?
I think those things will be
I think those things will be considered for prizes, but that doesn't mean seperate categories per se for everything.
Three Categories
There are separate categories for 1)overall winning team 2)winning all-female team and 3)solo category. Obviously there are various prizes for other categories (ie: fastest lap) and so on.
Having seperate prizes per
Having seperate prizes per gender for fastest lap is one thing, but #2 makes for seperating the whole race. I'm on a mixed gender team, and I think there are only 2 all female teams. I don't think that's very fair to mess with the prize odds like that.
explained
The overall winner category is by far the most badass and most important and highly sought award in the land. The other (sub)categories are lesser awards. The idea of #2 is to recognize the badass girlz that choose to go it alone, no boys alowed becuase they have cooties. The Solo award should probably be a handle of Jack because that person is messed up anyway. Everyone (male, female, mixed gender, solo) are eligible for the overall winner category.
[EDIT: of course, if everyone agrees that a subcategory for all-female teams is not a good idea, then it of course we can eliminate it]
I think all girls implies
I think all girls implies that they need their own category and can't handle the real race, which is absurd because there are many girls here who could race me under a table and back again. If you're going to do an all girls team award, then you should have like, all guys or all hamsters in balls category.
&tldr - it isn't necessary to have an all girls award and it should just be redistributed to prizes for other awards, like best way to spend time not-racing award or something.
+1
>other awards, like best way to spend time not-racing award or something.
That should definitely be a new award category. congrats.
I can see both sides of this
I can see both sides of this arguement as being valid. I think we should let the female racers decide if they'd like to have their own category or not.
I think it's bad because it
I think it's bad because it discourages us from riding with our guy friends. I am not racing with guys because I think they will help me be on the winning team. I am racing with them because they are my friends, and they asked me to be on their team. I know that there are many teams that will be way faster than us, and we have little chance of winning the overall. However, if I were on an all girls team, I would have no where near the amount of competition for the all girls category. And given the girls out here, I would have at least the same chance of winning the overall prize as I do now. That just doesn't seem right. It's actively discouraging girls from joining mixed teams. Given the low numbers of all girls teams, it doesn't really seem like a large enough category to warrant its own prize.

award categories
I don't see the reason for fastest girl team either if there's not a lot of girl's teams. (Comparison: i compete with guys at the track because there aren't a lot of ladies; when i do enter a ladies race usually it's not very much fun because there's only like 4 of us and 2 of them are olympians who outride every guy at the track.)
Fastest woman's lap-DEFINITELY! WITHOUT QUESTION! As well as separate male & female fastest solo effort.
"A" for effort on creating an encouraging racing environment for women! Personally, the women's team award seems sort of silly if there's only a few women's teams.
Exactly!! There are plenty
Exactly!!
There are plenty of women out there for the women's lap, but the probability on the all women's teams is off kilter.

you just had to go there as i was uploading it. hold down shift and click refresh.
a suggestion!
No click-through link on the pic and no details - that's not entirely useful towards understanding what the race is about. If that's because you're still working out the details, just having a click-through link on the pic and a thing saying, 'Check back for details, but this is what the race will essentially be,' would be helpful before you even start handing out those totally awesome flyers. Otherwise, you're handing out awesome flyers that point you to an equally awesome (but duplicate) online flyer.
don't worry
this won't be up for very long. I think it is ok for now to keep it mysterious. I am working on a much more "complete" website design and, CK schedule permiting, it should be up by the time we go full blast with flyers on Sept 30.

i think that it is probably implied in the good/evil cards, but i think it would be nice to explictly get the sun and moon in there.

i liek it.
We will also develop a
We will also develop a "good" poster featuring a rider in the city, but this time it will be a female on a cruiser and it will be white, maybe blue linework, with the same title.
why the male/female contrast? Is there an inherent link between male/female differences and evil/good differences? I'm cool with this appearing on one set of flyers but lets not let multiple usages of the male/female contrast pop up.
Its not that i'm against exploring or presenting those differences but it seems like its not in our style. On the man/woman topic we should portray our amalgamate attitude. Plus it broadens the spectrum of the theme: Implied Binary Contrast (Day/Night, Good/Evil, Black/White, Light/Shadow, etc etc etc) building from the fact that the race will be half happy daytime racing, half gruesome intense night craziness. I mean why not extend this "binary" to peanut butter/jelly or DLR/Hagar?
I thought of this earlier
I thought of this earlier today but didn't have time to come up with as eloquent of a response. jason++
Lets not overanalyze, here.
Just adding more contrasts, I thought. We started with a certain image -- of a guy -- and we're providing contrasts to it. Also the down in the drops vs. up on the cruisers. I thought that the idea of including both genders in our posters was to show that we are inclusive. If someone wants to make more with angelic guys and demonic girls, like the male/female associations of yin and yang, I say go for it, but maybe the idea of limiting ourselves to two main images is to conserve our efforts and streamline our advertizing.
androgynous
yeah, it isn't like that rider on the poster is obviously male or anything, maybe they just both just be bikers, and neither overtly masculine or feminine. i am not personally bothered by the tough guy and nice girl thing going on (i would rather be a tough guy than a nice girl, anyway), but it seems like a weird design requirement.
i thought so, too
i know what pic that is, and i like the way it was stylized to be sort of ambiguous in the gender department. really helps get around all of this mess i think.
i don't understand why it
i don't understand why it matters. ambiguity and androgyny do nothing but inspire disassociation and ambivalence. hardly evocations you want when you are trying to entice someone to come stay up all night and race! evoke energy, evoke tension, evoke strife. 'the battle of one woman against a thousand rearview mirrors', 'the test of man against nature', 'resist the darkness, defeat the light. only your speed and reflexes will save you.' say things that bring people in, show images that people can relate to. if i saw two posters advertising opposing events and one had some ambiguous international safety icon for bipedal entities astride something that vaguely resembles a snocone being eaten by PacMan, and the other poster had some hot rendering of a chick rippin her way through a sea of cars... which am i gonna attend?
who cares if you show a man or a woman or a man vs a woman, it's something you can relate to and it's something that has a known connotation in history (white for purity and femininity, black yada yada yada), use it to your advantage to more adequately and intensly convey your meaning: struggle. break your stereotypes, break your rejection of stereotypes, and stop feeding the beast of oversensitivity.
if you have a problem with guys being portrayed as evil and women being put into a cute happy fluffy role, then come out and let your pedals do the talking. i personally, in an attempt to prepare for the pending battle, have begun depriving myself of cigarettes and alcohol so as to make myself as emotionally and mentally as unstable as possible, thereby allowing only my rage and pure physical form to emerge. i suspect i will need studded tires to maintain traction amidst the flood of motoroil and blood that will inevitably ensue. i hope all of you are up to date on your tetanus vaccinations.
>disassociation and
>disassociation and ambivalence
???
In the same sentence?
Was this on the RR exam?
PS. No need to deprive yourself of anything, its a relay not a race. right?
ah indeed, a relay...race.
ah indeed, a relay...race. or whatever it is you might call a timed event based on speed and accumulated distance. a trial maybe?
i am not saying that
i didn't say: don't depict a woman. i thought it might be a good solution to have both be kind of generic bikers, but i am just saying that if you have some guy with blood and sweat dripping off of him, and some girl riding a cruise farting flowers or something, it seems a little contrived. and more sexist than depicting a male on both flyers. i am saying find two badass pictures of a person/people biking, male or female or animal or robot or whatever, and make one set during the day, and one set during the night. i think that both should look slightly aggressive, which i think is what you are getting at, but my impression was that the daytime card was supposed to evoke a non-competitive 'feminine' quality of the race. just seems weird to stereotype a woman that way, and a weird design requirement.
i think that's what i was
i think that's what i was trying to get at. sorry i'm not on point today.
kinda, but not really.

i'm building a robot that looks like a grizzly bear. Its gonna infiltrate the "regular" bear clan and destroy them one at a time, during the night.

Panda Bites Man, Man Bites Him Back
Of course this could never happen here. tic.

BEIJING (AP) - A drunken Chinese migrant worker jumped into a panda enclosure at the Beijing Zoo, was bitten by the bear and retaliated by chomping down on the animal's back, state media said Wednesday.
Zhang Xinyan, from the central province of Henan, drank four jugs of beer at a restaurant near the zoo before visiting Gu Gu the panda on Tuesday, the Beijing Morning Post said.
"He felt a sudden urge to touch the panda with his hand," and jumped into the enclosure, the newspaper said.
The panda, who was asleep, was startled and bit Zhang, 35, on the right leg, it said. Zhang got angry and kicked the panda, who then bit his other leg. A tussle ensued, the paper said.
"I bit the fellow in the back," Zhang was quoted as saying in the newspaper. "Its skin was quite thick."

so females aren't competitive? you have a lot to learn, my married friend.
CHALLENGE
I think this argument is really just a challenge to the girls to create an ultra aggressive, competitive team this year. Otherwise, you are stuck with the steriotypes!
just because
Just because I said she would be female on white doesn't mean she is going to be non-competitive and wussy. This flower-bitch will be blazing a trail. I agree a great deal with the Panda and I will not soften /"make ambiguous" the poster to appease a PC committee.

Umm, Seth...
The tokens look good. But I thought we were going to keep the graphics secret for as long as possible to prevent cheating.
They don't get the numbers
They don't get the numbers until they are issued (or UID), but this is a conceptual mock-up... the animals don't really go with the theme :). Plus the more I look at a print out the more I think they are too small.
Ok, new tokens, this time
Ok, new tokens, this time only six to a page, so they are bit harder to misplace now. Race organizers, email me at sjkingry@gmail.com if you wish to see the proof.
Spoke Cards
Ok, I put together a very rough spoke card design that is just the back (Team # in the FM Gear, and the Team # spelled out with the number portion in all caps below it). This took way too much time without the Futura font (if you want to know how I pulled it off, I explain over a beer).
Can someone graphically inclined put together a front portion of the spoke card? Something snazzy, embodying the race.
Should we just do a small map instead? Or a cue sheet and contact info (In Case I am found, please contact... blah blah)?
Come on guys, this race is open source, let's get some input!
http://fastermustache.org/index.php?q=gallery&g2_itemId=16632
Definitely a map and/or cue
Definitely a map and/or cue sheet. Maybe 2 spoke cards so that one can have snazzy artsy stuff. And I like the contact info idea.
After crunching numbers...
Ok, after going this over in my head, I have come to a conclusion...
No cue cards. You know the route or you don't. This isn't a squid ride. (My apologies to the squids reading this, but this relay still has alleycat roots).
To save on production costs, I have decided that the best course of action is to make a simple spoke card, b/w design on one side (FM24 specific, hell it may just say 'FM.24.06' in the Futura typeface), and on the other side... nothing. The blank back is to facilitate my special team numering system, a fat Sharpie marker.
There you have it folks. If you object, I challenge you to develop a spoke card design of your own and present it here for critique.

We are planning to have
We are planning to have people from out of town. Seems like having the set route on the cards is a good thing. Please explain the point of team numbers on the spoke cards, because I'm not getting it. Seems like a big hassle to me.
Yeah, route on spoke cards
Yeah, route on spoke cards gets a +1 from me due to out of towners. Team numbers on spoke cards is also a carry over from lat year, it's a little bit of a hassle, but say you were on team 7 and won, then if you keep your spoke card on your bike riding around later people will know, etc.
Ok, I see the winning
Ok, I see the winning factor. We definitely shouldn't preprint numbers on because it's easier to have lots & lots of the same spoke card. But all we have to do is leave a small white space for the team number to be sharpied on. Then we don't have to worry about non-prereged teams not being pre-printed, either.
P.S. Has anyone from our team pre-reged our team?

Please make sure you're at CM to collect FM24 money, and for waivers. I know one rider who needs to sign the waiver but won't be able to race until 7pm, so waivers @ CM would be killer. Perhaps you should have a receipt book, so we have a paper trail, unlike our elections.

Ok, the reasoning behind the not having a map on the spoke card... a spoke card sized map is too damn small to be effective.
Here is a full sized electronic map of the route:

A cue sheet would be better, but a cue sheet is better served as something you can hold in your hand with some notes you jot down to help you. So with that, here is a simple cue sheet I made a while ago to help me (minus my top secret notes):
Start Johnny's 0.0
R @ Randolph 0.15
CP @ Thumbs Up 0.63
R @ Edgewood 0.64

End Johnny's 10.14
My recommendation to those who have out of towners on their team... print this cue sheet out (or one you make yourself, with some top secret notes) and show them the map and then ride the route with them making sure they understand the route.
If you want a map on the spoke card, make a map, put it in JPG format, and e-mail it to me:
