Since no one has made any headway on selecting a route, I'm prompting the collective to come to a decision in exactly 7 days (4pm, Friday, August 18th). The race forum doesn't seem to have any people talking directly about routes. I think that people who have suggestions should create a route using GMaps Pedometer, link to it here in a post, and defend their route. The important thing is to GIVE YOUR NAME A ROUTE. That will make discussion a lot easier. Then in one week, I think someone (prob. me) will create a sepearte page listing all the routes and each person gets one vote. The winner takes the cake.
What does everyone think about this idea?

Sounds fair to me.
So one week, everyone?
That'll give tech kids enough time to propose routes before classes start. Not sure about teh other skools around here.
GSU starts the same day
GSU starts the same day (Aug. 21) as Tech.

Err, put the needle on the record
Who is hosting the race this year?
Estoria? Are they confirmed?
Will it be at your new spacious 6000sqft loft?
How can you eat your puddling if you don't eat your potatoes?
Opps, sorry, just a little Pink Floyd flashback.
Seriously, how can you select a route without knowing the host?
PS. The new owners of Estoria (Anton has moved on) have been rolling up bars from Oakhurst to VH to CT, etc. They should want to play ball, but the hour is getting late.
Lastly, Anton was especially gracious in his support for us, but its a mistake to assume that will happen again. I've talked to bar owners and mgrs in VH and they either want to get paid something or have no interest. The real logistical challenge is how to serve breakfast sunday morning.
PPS. I think we need a race czar to make this race a reality.
good point. so...no i can't
good point. so...no i can't offer my place yet since we haven't even signed a lease.
but i may add, Do we HAVE to serve breakfast? I mean, can we run this mother out of a parking lot? Do we NEED any of the ammenities we had last year? it was fun and made things easier, but if need be, we could run this out of someone's apt, possibly FM Lofts.
How about an Oligarchy? I'm willing to be on the council of doers.
It's probably a good thing
It's probably a good thing to have a place where people can be inside in the hours when the man might be concerned about a lot of loud people running around outside.
official oligarchy? we're all on the council.
i think that's a bad idea. It'll make you and whoever else an easy target for blame and responsibility should something go wrong or if people don't like a certain aspect of teh race. Not to mention authorities would have a rather obvious lead.
I think we should continue with the current "open source" format of the race. You've already illustrated how the race should be done properly: someone steps up, makes a suggestion, sets a due date, and people respond. If this thing falls through we only have ourselves to blame, because we all have an input on this process.
the only oligarchy in this case is self-forming. still, i bet this entire process and people's reactions would make an interesting psychological case study.
one of the beauties of open
one of the beauties of open source is things get done when they are finished and not according to any particular schedule. Something needs to be done to our format to ensure that things can happen by the deadline which is rapidly approaching.
oh yeah?
I'll rapidly approach you!
So does anybody have any
So does anybody have any proposed routes or what? Dawn, didn't you have one? If so, let's ride it tonight.
I got one...
yeah. lemme see if I can find it...
ok so we need to secure a
ok so we need to secure a home base first...
...what about Rocky Mountain Pizza? gunfunny?
you could call the ride to
you could call the ride to base camp "The Mountain" aka 10th street. Killer.
This is possible... hmmm,
This is possible... hmmm, let me discuss with the management.
and the hour grows late...
is Estoria out for this year? have they been asked?
have other people/places been contacted? some ideas where i don't know anyone to ask... azul likes to party late... there are lots of really big warehouse/loft spaces in castleberry hill and west end... any open gallery spaces... hell, i would offer up my house but it is small for even me and two dogs.
it seems we only need a spot where we can seek shelter in case it gets fuzzy and maybe if the weather is bad (and a bathroom would be nice to have). there has to be a spot in this big city to call 'home base'.
teh hour does grow late
ckdake, is there a way to have liek, an official counter counting down to FM24HR?
that would be on the
that would be on the 24.fm.org site and once we have a route and a location someones supposed to work on that..
plan F.
i have gotten a nibble from one of my friends in the gallery realm. he has a few questions before proposing the idea to the other couple of tenants in the building.
Questions:
-Are they in serious contention to be host? (he does not want to waste his time explaining the details to the tenants if the space is not usable)
-Would we be willing to rent a port-a-potty? (not sure why considering there is a bathroom...resonable maybe but gross definitely)
-Will there be an 'administrative type' on site at all times? (i'm thinking any number of us could fill this role and while no single person will be there the whole time, someone would be - so yes?)
Disclaimer:
-This is on the far east side (we're talking Dekalb Farmers Market) and would either turn any route into a Decatur Bicycle Relay or we could do long exhaustive routes for this challenge of endurance and then talk lots of trash.
-The space is basic with a decent size parking lot.
-Breakfast would have to be grillable, microwavable, or catered.
i guess just let me know if i should talk with him again about it or if we want to go ahead and rule it out. maybe we can tell him that we are working plans B-E and we'll let him know by if we need to use plan F. mine and his feelings will NOT be hurt by discarding this option. i know this is not ideal, but i haven't heard a ton of other options being discussed. if i don't hear anything in the next few days i'm just going to tell him we aren't interested.
if nothing else...check out his spot and he'll teach you to blow some glass.
http://www.duckbillstudios.com/cms/index.php
oooooooooo glass blowing (+ friend recommendation = yay!)
If we did it there, we could easily get cheap pastries from the Farmer's Market or one of the bakeries on Laredo Dr.
whoa! (sidenote)
do you know tadashi?!
i took a lot of glass blowing lessons from him...he's incredibly gifted and really really nice. i had no idea he opened own studio. that's so exciting! he's such a cool dude...i'm really happy for him.
smaller city.
tadashi
i've known tadashi for ~9 years. he is a great guy and an amazing talent. he's been a family friend since he was in art school with my brother and could barely speak english. he worked for a couple years with richard jolley and is finally the resident artist in his own studio. duckbill is having their 1 year anniversary on sept 23rd (i'll forward you the evite).
plan G?
so i went ahead and let Tadashi know we would not need Duckbill for the weekend.
i heard some other options being discussed this past Wed. anything?
Austin, were you and
Austin, were you and Stephanie able to hook up?
scandalous!

cricket....cricket...cricket....
i'm not sayin but i think there may be some sort of scandal... i'm just sayin.
