I liked that there was at least one killer hill.
how did no one get my reference?
...the saga continues.
Riding in the Park's Nice
...but it's not open 24 hrs.
I thought it was a pretty
I thought it was a pretty good route. In general I'm not so fond of riding on 10th street (I usually prefer to cut through that neighborhood, Myrtle -> 8th -> Monroe -> Virginia), but obviously the race isn't so much about taking a comfortable cruise through the neighborhoods, it's a race!
That hill at the end near the golf course is appropriately killer. Don't need any more killer hills plzkthx.
the good, the bad, and the potholes
good: i like riding up behind the capitol, that's nice.
bad: that damn hill, but "bad" in a good way.
potholes: figure out a way to get of estoria without doing treacherous wylie->carol street. suggestion: take estoria, go through cool S curve, right on memorial (might add another hill, too).
what about a shorter loop
it may incourage more participation OR have the option of having the lap run in either direction
in either direction is a bad idea.
it will be much easier to run the course one way over the other, so offering both directions would just fuck shit up.
plus, inevitable one way
plus, inevitable one way will be faster than the other and people will always take the easier way...thus negating the "both"
i like it
i liked the route, although i have to agree with melissa on the potholes section of her analysis. who knows, i would hope the city would clean up their mess by sept but that may be wishfull thinking.
also - not sure if the kids returning from last year's relay would like some change. i did not ride last year so it doesn't matter to me. i'm just happy to be here.
i think some change is
i think some change is important. that route is getting stale; mostly because it has become the defacto ride:
"hey wanna go for a ride?"
"sure, where?"
"i don't know how bout the 24h loop?"
"ok, whateva. i'm too lazy to think up a different route."
d00d, wtf
bike everywhere.
i have to agree
not that the route isn't awesome, but wouldn't it be awesome to have an even more killer, fresher route this year. what about trying to incorporate downtown but not rely so heavily on peachtree (try say, w peach, spring, peach ind., etc.), hit up oakhurst and kirwood neighborhoods (which have lots of newly painted bike lanes--granted for not too long, but a bike lane is still a bike lane). these are just a few ideas. since the planning is starting so early it wouldn't be hard to develop an entirely new route. i will volunteer myself to work on that issue if any others are interested in staking out cool streets and areas!!
another important thing to
another important thing to keep in mind is not allowing for super easy short cuts. The old 24 route was pretty good about that as far as I could tell.
Also, we need to be
Also, we need to be concerned about the variety of terrain and road conditions. Last year's route had a nice variety and I think it's important to maintain that.
dfunk is right. we need a
dfunk is right. we need a couple hours in the flats, maybe by the coast, then turn inland and get a few easy rolling hills; a good hard climb, then maybe a timetrial; and then a nice leisurely jaunt back into 97 with the wind at our backs, a well earned beer or two after 24 days, er, i mean hours in the saddle. viva la ciccliciciiii.
How about
What if we did this:
road to downtown
took Marrietta street to 17th street took 17th street to peachtree
peachtree to 10th
10th to Virgiania Ave
Virgiania Ave to North Highland
N Highland to L5
L5 to edgewood
edgewood to Krog and home?
I am not sure how long this rout is, but half is down hill and the other is up. there is a big hill (10th- Monroe- Virginia)
to get to 17th
from marietta we'd need to take either:
A) Northside (hill right before 17th)
or
B) Howell Mill (holes here and there, i think)
this sounds liek a pretty fun route.
17 miles. That is my
17 miles. That is my favorite bike ride BTW. All of ATL, E and W side.
If yall want to
We can ride it sometime and I can track the milage with my lighting speed road bike speedometer.
how's about
tonight @ teh wednesday night ride?
just go slow...
That's cool.
But what if we went for a freaking huge lap. Westide to Buckhead to Downtown to Castleberry Hill/Westend back around Downtown to E. Atlanta/Grant Park To Estoria
mwuhahahahaha
Big isn't better
When riding the 24 hour loop I vote for something that encompasses around 10miles +-
Agreed
smaller loop = more laps = bigger feeling of accomplishment = getting pumped = more laps!!
i think that
was teh consensus last night at teh wed night ride as well.
